Re: Amtrak Hiawatha Discussion: Chicago - Milwaukee and Possible Extensions

Yes, but WisDOT is not in the multi-state consortium, so they'll either be buying their own units for pool use or they're buying into the consortium. My guess is they're adding to the pool.

Re: Amtrak Expansion Plan

None of that matters because he is cutting dinners on the long distance trains. They also seem to be overlooking the fact He is doing it to comply with a congress mandate by 2020 Yep. They somehow place dinner on a china plate as more important than increasing train service to communities where it ...

Re: Amtrak Expansion Plan

Interesting - the largest expansion discussions since 1971 and possibly largest new equipment orders are happening under 1) a CEO that the rail community tells everyone is trying to kill Amtrak 2) an administration that the rail community hates thinks is trying to kill Amtrak Makes you really questi...

Re: Holocaust trains, Netherland railways offer compensation.

Isn't it pretty normal practice that as an institution evolves or is taken over by another institution, it takes on both the assets and the liabilities of its earlier incarnations? If you buy a company that is in debt, you are usually also buying that debt, unless it has been written off by bankrup...

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

$10 labor per meal plus the cost of the food itself, the service-ware, and the cost of the delivery/storage/disposal. Let's just assume the dining car is a sunk cost... If you were to assume labor as 30-50% of the cost of any given item, I'd say $27 is a pretty good actual cost estimate for a breakf...

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

Mr. Olesen, within this doc regarding the closure of the GM Lordstown facility, it is noted that the "relo" costs of affected employees will be in the range of $30K per head. Under "New York Dock", a '30's Agreement that remains precedent, any adversely affected Amtrak employee under Appendix C-2, ...

Re: The future of sleepers

Sure, you can squeeze more bunks, but it’s ultimately a car that’s only useful on a handful of routes. A car not moving and not occupied isn’t making money. At some point, car utilization is going to start to be looked at by the guys controlling the purse. A lie-flat car could easily be used on a co...

Dunno... this was all done under duress and a hostile occupation. What option did the railroad managers and crew really have?

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

Exactly. As long as they're offered a job, they're considered protected. I don't see anything regarding location proximity protection, so it could be that a cook who gets displaced from NYC could be offered a cook's position based out LAX and that would count. If they turn down the LAX position, but...

Re: Your New "Station Wagon" - Uber

It's a lot more convenient and less costly than a taxi. But, it's also unpredictable i.e. you never know if there will be someone looking to pick up a fare. Then again, of the last four times I've booked a cab, twice I've been ghosted, so even that's not a guarantee.

Re: Train To The Plane

In Los Angeles, I've taken Amtrak to Metrolink to LAUPT, and then there's an express Flyaway bus to LAX. Our family was vacationing in San Clemente, which made it quite convenient when I had to leave early on a business trip.

Re: When will passenger RRs have incidents like United/American?

Mr. Olesen, by "voluntary surrender personal of control", I mean---- "Electronic strip search" to get near an aircraft. Buckling up Disable electronic playthings. Go to potty when they say you can. The controls are reasonable and in the interest of passenger safety - and simply a "price" that need ...

Re: Amtrak and TRE Dispatching Fort Worth to Dallas

There's actually a fair amount of double track in the Tarrant County portion of the line, but filling in the gaps doesn't make economic sense because the demand isn't there. There's also the problem of bridges... new bridges are needed over TX-360 and the Trinity River downtown.

Re: The future of sleepers

Sleepers in general are an outdated concept. Adapt the pod seats like you now see on Jetblue or international business class aircraft, and you get a multi-position seat that can be a lie-flat bed, something to relax in while you look out the window or watch a movie on your tablet, or a workdesk to g...

Re: California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) System

Huh.. That sounds a lot like what Anderson has been pushing for a strategy.... Build up the corridors, grow the ridership, and gradually increase the demand and support for higher speed services.
