Re: Metro-North Hudson Line Electrification

Very insightful. Thank you. Using the information in this post you could conceivably place one substation in the vicinity of Beacon and one at Croton to cover the Hudson line, one in the vicinity of Rennsaler, leaving only two locations in between to deal with. Rolling stock and motive power issues ...

If they go to Albany, the third rail is getting ripped out north of Spuyten Duyvil, 25 kV overhead is getting strung where only 3 substations can cover the entire near-150 miles, and MNRR will be ordering New Haven Line MU's to run the Hudson out of GCT & NYP and sending it surplus-to-(Harlem)-...

Folding bikes are great but they're considerably more expensive. I agree that it is the answer for most.

If they see it they will say something. A conductor on my Hudson Line train made an announcement and yelled down the platform to a guy who tried to board with one at Beacon on Friday. It doesn't happen often (as most folks know that you don't bring bikes on peak trains) but they're pretty good at sp...

Some Shoreliner I/II cars do not have handicapped stickers.

Are Shoreliner I/II cab cars considered by MNR to be handicapped-accessible? I've seen many that have seats removed to accommodate a wheelchair, but many does not equal all.

Does it normally hold on a track outside of the car appearance facility at Highbridge? I don't think I've noticed it before.

What's with the CSX train and tanker cars parked at Highbridge? The train had a caboose/office car at the end so it struck me as "not normal".

I don't see the point in having the transfer at Croton. Since their connections are dedicated, it doesn't save track space through the work zone. I can't figure that out, either. My best guess is that they're saving money on fuel. You're already paying a crew to take everyone to/from Croton on the ...

OK -- thanks for the info.

Yikes... that's a long time for those cars to sit there. Does anyone have the car numbers for the cars involved in the derailment?

Very well could be; I figured they were shipped off or scrapped a long time ago. If I see the cars again I'll jot down the numbers.

On the way in this morning I noticed some wrapped cars sitting on a track on the north end of the Croton shops... the numbers appear to be first or second generation shoreliners -- the car numbers were spray-painted on the wrapping.

Interesting presentation, but what solution does it offer? You have a bus that currently runs from Beacon's train station up to Main Street, and on to Route 9/Walmart/Westage Center. It's not full. Competing with that using a diesel MU or something similar is going to be more expensive and also run ...
