Re: Illinois Amtrak Service

Saw the northbound Illini in Champaign today. About 15 minutes late, I think--within normal limits. It was Superliners, just as Mr. Norman saw back in May. A treat for the corridor pax getting long-distance seating, but surely that's not why Amtrak did it. Does the Illini often run with Superliners...

Metra Electric, and the IC in the past, ran special "game day" trains to 12th and 18th streets. Very handy for us south suburbanites. I guess Mr. Olson doesn't consider us worthy of such service, interested in only the ease of commute for northwest siders.

The big question is "who will pay for the Bears' new playground?" The McCaskey's? Don't make me laugh. These cheapskates have made a fortune on their original $500 investment, but they don't like to spend their money. So who will actually pay for the stadium? The state? Chicago's Democrati...

I'm going to take "no later than" June 1st, 2021 in the betting pool for the date when these cars are all suddenly put into service by a Biden appointed CEO Mr. O'Keefe, I'm starting to "feel like a Wallenda" commenting further. However, should there be a change in Administratio...

Re: Moving to one terminal per big city - wise?

The only railroad I can think of that used more than one terminal was the New Haven and that was just for trains that were not terminating in New York. PRR: NYP and Exchange Place (the latter was the original terminus of the PRR main line). B&O used two stations in Pittsburgh depending on wheth...

Having a single terminal for intercity trains in Chicago seems like a such a slam dunk, that I am surprised that any alternative of having several terminals would even be considered, but this is a board where people seem to enjoy discussing ways to contract an already small passenger train network. ...

Royal Gorge - D&RGW Tehachapi Loop - joint SP & AT&SF Feather River Canyon - WP Sounds like the OP is compiling a guide for people traveling by train to see scenic attractions today. While the Royal Gorge may be seen from a tourist train, the Tehachapi Loop and the Feather River Canyon ...

It doesn't make any difference what time the train leaves. Nobody but railfans would ride it. The only reason any of these mixed trains existed (beyond say 1950) is by legislative edict or a requirement in the railroad's original charter. No one in their right mind (which, of course, excludes railfa...

So far, this May has been the wettest May in the Chicago area since records have been kept. And we still have a few days to go. So, I imagine the South Shore has had some flooding problems.

That was a good story. It answered the question why the Soo continued to run a mixed train long after Amtrak, it was required by the state legislature. It also answers the question "Who would ride such a train?" Only railfans, of course.

What's the criteria for a stop? Any place along the line with 100 people? Operate like the Alaska RR's Hurricane Turn, stoping anywhere that somebody flags down the train? Honestly, in 21st Century America with paved roads, there's no need for such a service. Trains, both freight and passenger, work...

The question is, who would ride such a train? This is the 21st Century, not 1880 or even 1920. Nobody os gping to ride a train that runs on "we go when we schedule," stops every now and then to a do an hour or two of switching and has absolutely no passenger comforts. There are a couple of...

Visit of Acela II to Chicago is getting quite a bit of press coverage. Radio and TV stations presented advance stories and afternoon news had coverage of train's stop at Union Station. Not bad for a train that will never run in the Chicago area. Some reports playing up manufacturer of parts in subur...

Using Superliners on the NEC seems an obsession for some people. Let's face it, it's never going to happen. Too many clearance problems, lack of low level platforms. Time to move on.
