Re: The best commuter agency

Let's not forget that many (most?) of the things that affect service quality are political decisions. Railroad employees have little or no say over things like fares, stop spacing, old equipment/facilities and insufficient capacity. So no one agency is "the best" but I think we all agree t...

Light rail maximum train length

Is there a practical limit to the number of cars use can run in one light rail train set? Most agencies seem to use two, and I've heard of four, but I don't know if it can go higher. I am thinking particularly about Boston's Green Line which is operating at or above capacity for most of the day. Obv...

Back to the original topic .... I've been biking over the craigie bridge several times since the partial closure. Traffic has been much heavier, which is causing delays to the EZ Ride shuttle and also to the T buses serving Lechmere, but I don't see any green line impacts. However, I haven't actuall...

Re: Red Line DTX Abandonment

I've thought many times about combining the two into one long station, mainly to alleviate the overcrowding (which in fact is even worse on the orange line there). I think there are ways to do that without building a new station (though it can remain a pipe dream in my little brain) but even adding ...

Re: Center Platform vs. Outside Platforms

I believe the required station width is 5 feet less with center platforms, assuming equivalent passenger numbers. I guess you can stagger the platforms in either case if inadequate ROW is available.

Re: Last Train - Logan to Kendall Square

If you get the last silver line bus, make sure to tell the driver you need the northbound red line. As I recall from one trip on the last SL bus from the airport, the driver said we would make the connection but he had to request the dispatcher to hold the red line (although when we got to South Sta...

Re: CharlieCard / Ticket discussion

If the station is staffed you should be able to get a CharlieCard. But if not, you can buy a magnetic CharlieTicket from a TVM inside the station. The day passes can be purchased on either media. However, if you wish to pay per trip, it will cost you a tad more on a CharlieTicket.

Re: Commuter Rail To Springfield- Hear Me Out!

I used to commute from Worcester to South Station, and then later from South Station to Worcester. The existing runtime of 1:30 for an express train is really pushing the limit of a reasonable commute. Another hour to Springfield is about what NJ Transit is doing with their Lackawanna Cutoff extensi...
