I left college to go into railroading. If I were to have the opportunity to go back and offer young me some advice, I would say stick with the degree. Once you finish college, then pursue a career with the railroad. The degree may not help with initially getting hired into a entry-level job, but it ...

This is long term environmental remediation project that will be daily trucking asbestos tailings between 2 points. Why not a rail shuttle of covered hoppers? There is no rail access to the mine site anymore, and the shortest route into the mill at Gilman is a total mess that would require signific...

The Francis L. Suter was taken off the 291 at Rutland on 7/29, over nighted at the Rutland engine house where it was fueled and watered, made a round-trip over the Bellows Falls Sub today (7/30), and will depart from Rutland on 8/1 on 290. I don't know its itinerary once it departs Rutland.

The final push to finish the rail installation on the Northern Sub has begun, VTR's in-house tie crew worked through the remaining twelve miles finishing up last week. And the contract rail gang (Frontier) is on site, scheduled to start installation today. Gonna be a busy summer!

Same as any time two or more crews are working in the same area, communication between crews to determine who is doing what, where, when, and for how long.

While trying to get to White River Junction, I pass through Rutland. I was reviewing this thread and one place was mentioned but would not come up in a google search. So I street viewed the area and found CJ's Suds on the east side of Rt7 sitting along a single track. From street view, it appears t...

How do they know when the last car has passed a speed limit increase sign in the real world with a mile long consist? There are several methods. One is to go off of mile posts. So if your train is one mile long, and the slow order runs from MP 58.1 to MP 59.3, the engineer would go past the resume ...

For those who missed it, GMTX 9000 led GMTX 2205 and P&W 4301 west on the Green Mountain Gateway this afternoon in what has to be a pretty solid overuse of power for a nine car freight. 303 and one of the other GMTX leasers were east with perhaps a chunk of the OMYA express, a few earlier at 15...

Each railroad uses their own station codes. And not all RR's use three letters, some use two letters, some use names spelled out. The only nationwide systems I know of are (1) the Rule 260 Junction Codes, which are the five digit Alpha codes assigned to junction points between RR's which are used wh...

I had the day off yesterday, and needed to head down to JP's to blow some of my night shift money on tiny trains. Since I got into town a bit early and it was a nice day I decided to swing down to the ALB station to grab a few pics of the ongoing work. I didn't bother to resize the pics when I uploa...

I took a day trip out of ALB to "the big city" last week. It is nice to see all the work going on, and not just the amount, but the actual progression of work. I get down the Albany/Rensselaer way once a month or so, and every time I get a chance to swing by the station there is noticeable...

http://rail.vermont.gov/sites/railroads/files/RailTrail_Web_CWR.pdf This is an old map from 2012, there has been some more work done on the Northern Sub since then. As of now, there are approx. 12 miles of jointed rail left to be replaced before the entire Northern Sub is welded rail outside of the...
