Re: Tri-Rail: Isle Casino Station

Interestingly, based on its supposed 6.8 mile distance from the still-standing Deerfield Beach SAL station as shown in the 1936 timetable below, I've long believed the original SAL station for Pompano Beach was exactly where they intend to put this new station, right where SW 3rd St/Racetrack Road c...

Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

Many millenials and younger can't do an arduous commute because they need 2 jobs to keep afloat. Things are so bad that the population of nuns is increasing for the first time in decades. When I mentioned that to my millenial daughter, her comment was, "It has job security and a place to live." I w...

Re: Looking for old picture of smoky Jersey City (from an NJT office wall)

I posted a 1924 pick of the PRR Harsimus Cove yard in JC (with a bit of the Erie yard) not too long ago. It's not particularly smoky, but I suppose it qualifies as a "favorite similar shot." Carl Hiassen calls Miami to Orlando plan "crazy" and says Branson has lost his marbles

Carl Hiassen needs no introduction to those of us in South Florida. This piece of his that came out in the Miami Herald this past Friday is, well, depressing. Virgin’s Brightline train dreams are going to be derailed BY CARL HIAASEN JUNE 21, 2019 09:56 PM, UPDATED JUNE 22, 2019 08:09 AM Sir Richard ...

Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

The younger generation (or "younger generation," as the esteemed Mr. Norman might put it) has gravitated to the urban core, rather than West Podunk. People will not be lining up to commute to NYC from Blairstown or anywhere across the Delaware. Even Andover seems like a waste -- you might as well j...

Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

I’m not even sure Andover would rate a station. Andover has limited (one-seat) Lakeland service and Lakeland even uses the former Cranberry Lake station on the Sussex Branch as a commuter stop and park-ride. Just about a hundred feet farther north of the station site. My cue to post a vintage photo...

Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

In any case, you don't need to go back that far for a comparison. How long would it take a railroad today to get approvals to build the cutoff in the first place ... Which illustrates what a joke this has become -- the damned cutoff is already built. They just need to re-lay the tracks Conrail remo...

Walk from the MIC to the current Amtrak station? It's a good 4 miles away!

Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

New Jersey Transit bought the cutoff from a private owner for $21 million in 2001. At the moment, plans call for the train to run 133 miles between Scranton and Hoboken, New Jersey, where another train would carry commuters into New York. Let's hope the reporter means PATH :P Who is going to commut...

Re: Amtrak in Miami (Hialeah, Miami Intermodal Center/Airpor

It's a shame that the current Amtrak station and the Tri-Rail/Metrorail Transfer station are only a quarter-mile apart, but each acts like the other doesn't even exist. It's only a very easy walk of 2 blocks or so if you're willing to hop a fence and trespass a little. Otherwise it's a roundabout ha...

The Iris interlocking is located here: https://goo.gl/maps/e5uzFSHdHM9pifzn6 . Seaboard and then CSX owned property for years that would have enabled them to build the northeastern part of a wye with the FEC tracks. CSX conveyed the property to the state DOT in 1990. While it still just shows up as ...

Local media reports various opinions from commuters. Some claim
they remembered pre 1990 Solari boards (I don’t remember those)
Are we talking the Solari flap-style boards? Those were only replaced in the mid-90s. I loved those.

Re: Lackawanna Cutoff Passenger Service Restoration

Ah, yes, I see what I did -- where the LVRR and CNJ come right next to each other west of Bloomsbury, I picked up the LVRR line. Still, I see a connection from the CNJ main to the LVRR there. It's only 5 miles or so to P-burg from that point; couldn't that stretch be shared with Norfolk Southern? Th...

Re: Glen Gardner station?

Where is/was the Glen Gardner station? I was trying to figure this same question out the other week. Just looking on Google Maps, I was sure it would have been/is located on Gardner Lane looping in from Main Street. But when I went to check on Historic Aerials, I noted that they labeled a relativel...
