Re: Bridge over long-abandoned line causes problems

One critical question would be whether there is currently a non-rail use of that ROW, for which CSX is deriving revenue. Examples would be buried fiber optic lines or a pipeline. I have driven over that now OOS bridge and other at grade crossings of that ROW for about a decade. I have never seen an...

There is a common sense solution, but I doubt this will occur, NYSDOT issues a declaration that CSX (and any future owners of that ROW) are not responsible for any maintenance of the bridge or any property around it. CSX issues a "quit claim deed" ceding that ROW to NYS and stating that th...

The CSX lawyers stated in a public letter that; The bridge was "upgraded" in 1966 with funding from NYSDOT (70%), Monroe County (15%) and NYCRR (15%). According to the CSX lawyers reading of NY Railroad law the "Superintendent of Public Works" was responsible for all future maint...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluing_(steel) There are a number of "Chemical Conversion" processes that can be applied to metals to prevent "rusting". The "blueing" of steel used in gun barrels is one of the early examples. Anodizing Aluminum is more modern. https://en....

"They could even use the fill from the approaches to level off some other road" I have driven over the now OOS roadway bridge over the Falls Road at that location many times. The topography around that area North and South of the New York State Barge Canal is very "hilly" (caused...

I believe those tracks went OOS in the late 1980's. And they where abandoned/torn up in 1994. All under Conrail. The line/rails from Lockport to Brockport was spun off to the Falls Road Railroad in 1996 after the tracks where removed East of Brockport. That was under Conrail. I doubt Conrail would h...

"Pure speculation: Could it be that the switch changed positions while a train was on it?" The turnouts in an interlocking are mechanically locked by the switch machines. The turnout is not going to "change position" without a command from the computer controlling the interlockin...

"Early reports said a trailing point switch was set the wrong way." In an interlocking ? And no signal indication showing a route was not properly lined ? And the locos and many cars made it over the "wrong way switch" before things hit the ground ? Early reports are often totall...

My Pop was fortunate that he never was involved in a fatal incident while he was a Loco Engineer for NYCRR / PC / Conrail for 40 plus years. One of his coworkers was running a passenger train during the NYC years and came around a curve to see someone get out of an automobile parked next to the trac...

A GP7/9 is 15 foot tall. From the first picture it looks like the door opening is 16 feet. I see about 3 2/3 door heights from ground to roof.

I going with 55 feet from ground to roof plus or minus a foot.

Given they were hauling salt to the falls to be split to chlorine and sodium There is a continuous loop salt brine pipeline from Niagara Falls to down around Leicester NY. No "mining" involved, they just drill a big well into a deep salt deposit and inject water. Salt dissolves and moves ...

Well, I was not there, You where not there and the person retelling the events based on his memory of something that happened decades ago paints a plausible picture of the events that night. I guess if you were the engineer on the NE States that night you would have stopped much sooner because you f...

I watched that again about the near wreck of the New England States and the derailed coal train. Was believable to me. Perhaps a few details got mangled a little bit. 1) The DS dropped the signals to RED in front of the NE States as soon as the coal train stated "we are in emergency" and t...

No, it was not. In general during 1943 roller bearings where not in widespread use. The Frankfort Junction wreck was caused when a plain "solid" bearing / axle journal failed. Yes some locomotives had roller bearings at that time and I would assume a few limited number of passenger and pe...

1943 derailment at PRR Frankfort Junction was before roller bearings; https://web.archive.org/web/20150518093840/http://specialcollection.dotlibrary.dot.gov/file?db=DOT-RAILROAD&filename=s%3A%2Fdot_56gb%2Frailroad%2Fwebsearch%2F2726.pdf The Mechanical Forces at PRR agreed that the axle journal w...
