Re: Genesis to get "life extension" program in 2018

Sorry to post in an old thread, just a quick question: It was mentioned above that the F59's are used hard and need a hefty overhaul. The 450-470 went through rehab work the last few years. Does anyone know how extensive that work actually was? Was it just paint and some touch ups or was it an actua...

Trainman, just curious, any reason why the current -3 rebuilds are retaining their original fuel tank size instead of going to the 2000 gallon tanks that the older -3's were given?

That might have been 184. It just returned from overhaul and was running on the Rock. 175 was on Northwest line 649/660 this evening.

I was wondering the same thing a few months back. http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=35147&start=15#p1371799 And a thread from years ago on the people's names. Maybe more info is available since then. http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=11941#p108633 On a...

Re: Purpose of red Mars Light and Beacon on F40PHM-2s?

The red beacons are for freeze protection. When the units are shut down and plugged into wayside power at outlying yards, they have a layover system that keeps their fluids warm, batteries charged, etc. in the winter. If that system fails, the red beacon will activate to alert nearby employees befor...

A little light and fun post for a Friday. Seeing as how the current group of F40’s and 400’s will all be getting new paint around the same time, I was thinking of something. When the 400’s were originally delivered, some were named for towns along the Milwaukee lines but the names were subsequently ...

And if that wasn't enough, I recently saw a photo of a Pullman car on a Heritage Corridor set, still with its MARC striping on the ends.

In the late 90's to early 2000's there were a few refurbished Pullmans running around the Milwaukee District. Im not sure if they were strays from the north central group of pullmans, but i definitly remember seeing them quite a bit on the Elgin trains.

Sorry to get a bit off topic for a second but I just looked at the picture of the AMT units in the link above, and see TWO K5LA's up there right above the cab! Not to mention the bell right above the windshield. First impression is the poor engineers who have to run those things, I wonder if earplug...

Thats a shame they are getting the MP36 scheme. With their angular bodies i thought the F40 scheme would look pretty good on them.

The hep engine has a manual breaker that determines if power is applied to the train. So the hep engine can run at full rpm and not supply any power. Other cities' versions also have an idle switch where the hep engine can be set to half rpm speed and just power its own radiator fan and not supply p...

I was told that a good spotting feature was their windows had rounded corners as opposed to more square on the ex-cnw cars. I believe they were used quite a bit on the north central when it first started so that might be a good place to look for photos. Their rta numbers were 7881-7885.

From what I understand, what was said by the CMO in a board meeting a few months ago, the F59's are basically test beds/testing the waters of newer/different technology like the 710 engines and separate HEP engines. As a side note, the dealer that the F59's were purchased from had quite a few F40's ...
