Re: COVID-19 Effects on SEPTA

2 observations: 1. It appears pilot trains are running on OOS lines. I stopped by Bala and Wissinoming stations this week, both tracks look in use. 2. This pandemic will have ramifications for months if not years to come for mass transit. Even with a phased in re-opening, many are going to try avoid...

Pipe dream guys. This economy is going to be so hosed we'll be lucky if there's a transit system a year from now, and I doubt people will return to riding for fear of catching the China Virus.

On a railroad related note, I wonder if SEPTA will run pilot trains on the OOS lines to maintain the physical plant or if everything will be left to rust.

Re: Future of Route 15 as a trolley line

Correction to my earlier post: Last day of rail ops is this coming Saturday. In regards to the future of the line, its all about funding. If the government is willing to fund new streetcars for the 15, it will be. If not, it will not be. That's usually how it works. Of course SEPTA will sway the gov...

It's not a rumor. It's been confirmed with top officials. The line is being scuttled because only 4 of the original 18 cars are functioning. SEPTA refuses to fix them and they've had lots of problems because of poor design and accountability. I wouldn't be surprised if trolleys never return because ...

This Saturday will be the last day of rail operations for the 15 for the foreseeable future. There's speculation that the 10 will be recalled to Elmwood to eliminate trolley mechanics at Callowhill.

Good to see the equipment being used and it gives additional crews a chance to stay qualified on them.

There are a number of parties that wish the line dead and perhaps even assisted this latest trail movement. These are the parties that continue to promote the fallacy that the line is a bad investment, stealing riders from other lines, not feasible, etc. SEPTA did their own study in 1991 that green ...

Don't be so sure. SEPTA doesn't care either way, to them it's all OPM (Other People's Money). They talk a good game when it comes to being a transit operator and helping the region, going "Green", etc, but at the end of the day they only answer to who signs their checks.

Re: SEPTA NPT card will be "SEPTA Key"?

Yes there's lots of gate jumping going on and little enforcement, and what enforcement gets done is futile. The problem is just as rampant on the buses. The real aim of Key was to cut down on lost fares on trains where conductors can't walk the cars to collect because of volume or crew size, though ...

Those studies that claim riders would be stolen from other lines would have been a good thing considering the parking situation at all stations in the area. Moot point since the line is gone and land that could have built parking for newtown riders. It would however have been a better investment tha...

What a mess. And in spite of the fare evasion obsession, you can get on a bus and still tell the driver you ain't got it and ride for free. Happens ALL THE TIME. The ADA faregates on the subways are heavily abused with people on the inside holding the gate open for people on the outside, or one pers...

So Montgomery County and Byrn Athyn Borough (or its influential residents) essentially conspired to stonewall SEPTA from upgrading the line or reactivating diesel service thereby robbing residents to the north of commuter rail service.

Surprising to see a fan trip running on Amtrak rails. Would have been nice to have seen this on the West Trenton line, or Doylestown/Warminster which are more scenic and rarely see these cars and would have had more horn action. My guess is convenience: Run it into stub track at Suburban, then back ...

Keep in mind Key is still useless on the trains unless you have a trailpass loaded on it. Travel wallet not an option, so if you're not a daily rider there's no point to having a lock card.
