Re: Amtrak Wi-Fi (WiFi) Availability

I never realized that the Wifi module is in the cafe car, which explains a lot. I was in one of the 1+2 business class cars with a cafe car, and I was surprised that it was an actual usable experience! I'm not trying to do any streaming or really anything extreme, just regular browsing, and it worke...

The somewhat near(er) term replacement of Terminal B, and longer term replacement of Terminal C necessitates the kind of terrible Airtrain routing for the near and forseeable future. The current Airtrain ends where the old parking garage used to be, so that they didn't need to extend it in any way. ...

One of the key issues is the future state of the airport itself. With the new terminal A in place, eventually, the terribly aged and inadequate terminal B will also be replaced. And given how long that will take, by that time, terminal C will also be need a replacement. The entrance points to each t...

No, but it can make it harder to do. Expansions and remodeling are allowed as long as they conform to the historic nature of the station. Frequently what you would see in MNRR territory where there were historic stations that needed a high platform is that they would create a new platform further fr...

Let's not forget that the toilet was also right next to a window, where the curtains aren't always neatly aligned and left light gaps. Not exactly the best experience in total to be quite honest, even though they were convenient.

What kind of problems are there buying one from an agent? It was just slow, and quite frankly wasteful. A envelope full of paper documents that no one will read or just throw out. Agent was using a laptop to process it. So much easier buying something like a Metrocard stored value card that was fig...

So this is certainly a little bit of beating a dead horse, but I've finally made a trip to SEPTA territory and use Key. It's like they actively want to discourage using the system. Boarded at Jenkintown to buy a card. What a slow process. Then the whole spiel about the $4.95 fee and how to get it re...

Well, Moynihan was more for Amtrak anyway, so I don't see the complaints from LIRR riders being too credible. Especially since you would have much better subway access from the old, dingy Penn than you would from the new shiny Moynihan. On a recent trip on the Cardinal, I needed to transfer to an NJ...

NJT has has TVMs at every rail station for years, and has been on the 2nd generation of them for quite some time. They even have TVMs at many outlying park and ride bus stations, and on the light rail. It always amazed me how SEPTA couldn't just do the same thing as countless other agencies. With th...

And I'd argue, given the state of several high profile infrastructure projects in Europe, they are not happening any faster or without huge price tags. Stuttgart 21 or Berlin Brandenburg come to mind as two examples, but more exist. And just up the block In NYC, it took over a year just to be able t...

So everything was initially third rail including the tunnels and Sunnyside? Then I have to guess that there had to be an engine change or at least a motor added just outside of the North River tunnels or in Newark. Interesting. Worse. You had to switch trains from steam to electric at the Manhattan...

There is an Enterprise location near both Trenton or Hamilton. Enterprise will pick you up (although check local locations during COVIDness), or you can take Uber/Lyft. Pretty quick drive to Six Flags. On the way back, stop in Robbinsville to get some great pizza at DeLorenzos in Robbinsville. The G...

SEPTA running the entire Keystone would be a terrible idea. There's a reason it's called SEPTIC. But you know, a Brightline style service would certainly be an interesting proposition. More luxury stations and services is intriguing to a lot of people. I know a lot of people that would take an Acela...

Why not just use an actual RIVERline set? Or switch off the AC and repower with 750 VDC for electric LRTs? It’s a hideous choice to abandon any sort of rail transport, even if heavy rail is obviously too much. You would end up with a very small fleet of rail cars with no easy way to maintain them. ...

I've always thought that operationally SEPTA runs a pretty good railroad. But in most other metrics, they are pretty terrible. Who would have thought that you could screw up fare collection so much, then 1234 comes up with KEY.
