Re: Equilateral turnouts

What evidence? Just curious. Both ends of Laceyville siding were standard turnouts in the 90s, as was Falls. http://www.marjum.com/lvrr/ General Order 1002 dated 12/75 shows a diagram of the new track layout resulting from the last of the single-tracking between Sugar Creek (Towanda) and Laceyville...

To me, the key identifiers are the fact that the 2 tracks fan back out to 4 tracks at the bottom (west) AND that the double crossovers are east of the 2-to-4 ladder. There were only a limited number of places where both outer mains were retained as sidings, and even fewer had the double crossovers a...

Photo location?

Does anyone have a guess as to where this photo was taken? https://images2.imgbox.com/6c/0d/i7xiCstA_o.jpg Somewhere between Buffalo and Cleveland, winter of 56/57. When Al Perlman joined the NYC in 1954, the Central was still mostly a 4 track property. Up to then, the NYC had only dabbled with CTC ...

East of Sayre, I've seen evidence that Laceyville and Falls were both equilaterals. Laceyville had been at the end of double track all the way from Sayre, and was the beginning of 30+ miles of single track through Vosburg tunnel without passing opportunities until reaching Falls. There was another o...

Equilateral turnouts

 by KevinD ¦  Tue Oct 05, 2021 10:43 am ¦  Forum: Lehigh Valley Railroad ¦  Topic: Equilateral turnouts ¦  Replies: 6 ¦  Views: 2137

Can anyone come up with a list of interlockings that were equipped with equilateral turnouts? Did their installation choice have anything to do with approaching track geometry permitting higher speeds? I noticed they are not really identified graphically in any late era track charts. Did it have any...

LV-N&W hand-off at Tifft

For the trains that made a direct hand-off between LV and N&W at Tifft, exactly what was the routing of these trains? How did they get from the LV to the N&W? Did they take the L&LE branch to the south into LV's facility at Tifft Jct and somehow jump over the PC tracks (how?) to get to t...

CSX vs boulder on Clinchfield - again

CSX had another boulder-caused derailment just after midnight near the hamlet of Clinchco VA. Grain train, 2 engines (both 3200 series) and 7 cars involved, so no fires and no fishing crews from the river this time. https://wcyb.com/news/local/train-derails-in-dickenson-county-near-clinchco-fire-dep...

The I-86 bridge is gone as of ~2008, replaced with a fill for both lanes of the interstate. The rooftop shot that shows the Reading logo on the boxcar is a west/south view that also shows the girder bridge in the distance that allowed the River line to cross over the abandoned PRR Rochester line. The more we progress, the farther behind we get. Here are some views of a bridge replacement on the B&O in the Youngstown OH area. The spot is just west of the Center St diamond crossing of the ex-PRR Youngstown Line and just west of the old PLE Gateway yard area. The old through truss bridge wa...

Fewer manned helpers at Altoona

Been seeing coal drags go past the cameras at Cresson and the Curve with AC traction DPUs on the rear instead of usual pairs of SD40E helper sets. I wonder how many fewer helper crews they are going without now. Do the DPUs get cut off at Altoona or do they go all the way through with the train to i...

Mt Tom coal

When the PLMT coal trains arrived from the west, did they yard the trains at East Deerfield and then head south via the loop when needed, or did they switch over to the Conn River at Greenfield and either go direct to the plant or get stored somewhere along the Conn River line?

Those sand towers erected by Guilford in Conklin in the '85 shop makeover WERE the old D&H sand towers from Wilkes Barre. They were brought north on flat cars.
