The L&NE's Catasauqua branch in latter years accounted for 10% of their total interchange traffic (occurring with the Lehigh Valley and the Reading railroads). A two-part article on the railroads of Catasauqua appears in the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society publication Flags, Diamonds and...

The units have been on the Reading and Northern since at least May 25, 2017. On that date a friend of mine was in Pottsville. He caught the R&N's recently acquired and newly repainted MP15 #1542 (ex NS #2426, which had had its final lettering applied the day before) with recently acquired ex-SRR...

Where did crew ride if there was no caboose?

While researching several eastern Pennsylvania shortline railroads (Ironton, Northampton & Bath, Chestnut Ridge), I learned that these lines rostered no cabooses until the late 1940s at the earliest (about the time they came under national union contracts requiring cabooses). I am aware that in ...

To clarify an earlier post, Reading and Northern is currently suing to run the North Shore group of railroads (six shortlines run in central Pennsylvania under contract for the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority). Luzerne and Susquehanna Railway is a separate railroad, run for a different authority (Luze...

It would appear Reading and Northern is not the only railroad fighting for a chance to bid on the North Shore contract. A Pittsburgh company is also interested in running the lines. Good gosh, I need to study their "roster" page more carefully. It appears Reading & Northern also picked up four MP15's that Norfolk Southern recently put up for auction.

A review of the "roster" page on the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern's website shows some new motive power: 4-6-0 #225 (formerly Railtours, Steamtown, and CP #1098) and GP39RN (rebuilt GP30's) #2534 and 2535 (ex LETX 2413 and 2435). I have seen some photos posted online of the 225. Sh...

Just a few years ago the former Reading Topton-Kutztown and Pottstown-Boyertown branches seemed left for dead. Good news…this Spring of 2015 you can ride both of them! The Colebrookdale Railroad started excursion operations on the Boyertown line last year, and weekend trips resume starting March 28....
