Re: Pan Am Railways (PAR) Maintenance of Way (MoW) Activity

This is not Pan Am or Amtrak— this is MaineDOT FASTLANE Grant $$ to expand the “intermodal” facility. There was a 5-pack of wells sitting in the pen for almost a year that was just pulled to make room for a project cargo move of airplanes to (or from I can’t remember) Europe. The airplanes, in piece...

Re: Rumford Branch, RUPO / PORU

He's suggesting building a mill owned warehouse in order to reduce storage costs. This is not a new idea for Rumford and well worth considering. Would you rather build a new warehouse at the mill in Rumford (not even sure where you'd have space for that) or build one further south or out of state w...

Re: What if no Guilford?

Possible that MEC would have picked up from Mattawamkeag and east to Saint John on the CP, then the CP could abandon what was left in Maine and let MEC handle traffic from SJ to SJ (if you can think of what those points would be). Although, I think there was some chatter at one point about CP wantin...

Re: Rumford Branch, RUPO / PORU

The Raws will always come in rail if you want to be cost competitive... outbound rail goes a lot of places, but off line RDCs will be a stronger than before rail to location for these mills. Notice how they are expanding production capacity but not warehouse space?

Re: Pan Am Railways (PAR) Maintenance of Way (MoW) Activity

With new welded rail and crossings, why would the track speed be limited to 25? Wouldn't these changes bring it up to a much higher class? Data proves limiting trains to 25MPH on track, even if it is rated for higher, has lesser annual maintenance costs. With low train density, ~4 through freights ...

Re: MMA what if?

I don't doubt for a second that SJ will indeed increase container counts and become a larger "niche" player, even agreeing that it could potentially become Eastern Canada's version of Philadelphia as you suggested. What I very much do doubt though, is that with all of its' shortcomings, it will eve...

Re: MMA what if?

Enquiring mind needs help decrypting. Freeport Bahamas is a direct call on the CANADA GULF BRIDGE service that calls SJ. Freeport is a well established major transshipment hub for MSC in this part of the world, think hump yard of steamship lines. CMA-CGM is French, while MSC is “Swiss” by location ...

Re: "Up North" Gawking (District 1 sightings)

Was it on an actually chassis or a flatbed (step deck or goose neck)? Eimskip has been selling off containers here and there, so they end up as storage units, sheds Ect and are usually hauled off by some kind of flatbed. Remember these things only last a few years at sea from the salt they tend to r...

Re: MMA what if?

A lot of factors going into who calls which ports. DP Worlds marriage with the Port of Saint John expansion positions them well to capture some volume for certain. What needs to be understood are the trade lanes— SJ currently has two services from MSC and CMA that are North-South covering the Latin ...

Re: MMA what if?

I find the fantasy of “what if the MMA didn’t blow up a town” a strange and pointless discussion. That outfit had so many safety problems before Megantic, you should hear some of the stories from crews before hand. Then the screw job with the Aroostook lines, where they thought they could sell to th...

Re: Genesee & Wyoming G&W Sold and Taken Private

GWI management didn't invest in growing their lines, just kept wheeling out cash they didn't have to buy new ones and hope it would drive up shareholder value. That balloon burst after the P&W acquisition where everyone knew they had stretch their pennies a little too far. My expectation is some lin...

Re: FRA Grant

Is the planned Saint John rail business going to compete with NY/NJ, Norfolk, etc for Midwest traffic or will it simply be a shuttle to/from Ayer handling exclusively New England traffic? Without DS service the former seems like it is going to be a long shot. There isn't anything mainstream at the ...

Re: CMQ Motive power

CEFX 1001, 1013 and 1008 have found their way on property over the weekend. They had been on the LS&I for many years and then recently were at CAD in Montreal. Not sure if they are being leased or stored on CMQ. https://www.railpictures.net/photo/700845/ EDIT: numbers have been updated, hard to tell...

Re: "Up North" Gawking (District 1 sightings)

ND Paper is apparently also putting all their truckload business out to rebid nationwide and is considering starting their own trucking company as they think they can do everything cheaper than the 1000s of existing truckload carriers who beat each other up over rates daily. Again - if truck carrie...

Re: "Up North" Gawking (District 1 sightings)

WATCO crews will get paid significantly cheaper (non-union potentially) wages Truly spoken like management. Those jobs belong to the men who have been servicing that mill for many years now. It is an absolute disservice to the employees if Pan Am really didn't bid. Internally I've heard they did bu...
