We had a rare mild January day here in the remote reaches of northern Iowa. Rare in that there was no snow on the ground and the temperature reached a high of 64 sunny degrees. With that combination, I had no option but to dig out the outdoor train. 15 minutes of setup and track cleaning and I was a...

The first issue of MR that I ever purchased was March of 1962 when I was 15. Prior to that we had a Marx train set given to my younger brother for Christmas (I was not happy over that).

I caught the twins switching a boxcar into the public warehouse.

Tanks, Crabman.

After the plaster sets up I use a hacksaw blade to create the flangeways.

I generally use Plaster of Paris and mix in some gray color. Then I level it and sand it.

I use the buried magnets and have converted to almost all Kadee #158 and am very happy. I have found them to be very reliable as well as being much closer to scale size which improves the overall appearance. They also seem to reduce the amount and frequency of false uncouplings I was experiencing. T...

My latest project is trying to understand why one of the two transistor throttles I built works perfectly and the other doesn't. I probably have either a short or have crossed a wire somewhere. I have traced the circuit multiple times and both are identical. I guess it's time to disassemble the non-...

I wasn't sure to post here or in the photography section. I decided on here because it's more about operations than photography. Now, before anyone gets really excited, this video was filmed with a $40 security camera from Menards. Quality is not good. What it does show how to build in switching tim...

I pour my sidewalks by building forms and pouring tinted plaster of paris. When it's dry, I smooth it out, scribe some lines on it, and hit it with a wash of alcohol/india ink to bring out the scribed lines.

The blue tape is what I used and it really doesn't conform to the details where thinner, more flexible tape might. Since it's so thick, it also left a ridge between the color lines.

2. Paint is not a hole filler. That was the hardest lesson for me to learn. In fact, paint makes every defect on the shell come alive! Did you use a primer coat first? -otto- Yes, I did. I think next time I may put on a coat of primer just to see where the problems are. Considering it was my first ...

Well, I got it done, such as it is. Here's my "sweep" switching a car into Puppy's Pet Products. http://www.frontiernet.net/~tbohlen/IMG_4285.JPG Lessons learned: 1. Use a good quality tape and make sure it's snug against the surface when masking off areas for painting. 2. Paint is not a h...
