Re: Bronx Third Avenue el

The 1968 Program for Action did call for a replacement line along the Metro-North (then Penn Central) right-of-way, but it never specified how the line would be built. The railroad cut was too narrow for additional tracks. Also, the maps I saw never showed a direct connection to the Second Avenue su...

https://jerseydigs.com/land-sale-could-advance-proposed-greenway-between-jersey-city-and-montclair/ That would be one beyond complicated rail trail to put together. You have (2) ancient movable bridges, WR & DB that were in barely usable condition when NJ Transit still used the line. I can only...

End of Putnam Branch Van Cortlandt station

Even though it was abandoned in 1958, the remains of the Van Cortandt station lasted for many decades. I've seen photos of the location in the 19th Century, and there was a wooden station there. By the 20th, there was a steel-framed platform cover (probably an unmanned station?) on the east side of ...

The bridge over the Henry Hudson Parkway, inside Van Cortlandt Park, is still there. I assume it is maintained by the city now, and it is open to foot traffic.

If a "dirty Diesel train" takes highway traffic off the roads now rather than waiting for the US equivalent of the Shinkansen to materialize at some vague date in the future, I think I'd take the trade off now rather than wait. Don't forget those Diesels will be Tier 4 compliant. Jon Dirt...

South Street in Newark will be a future stop on the PATH extension to EWR. ... I doubt that, as there are no plans for it. Cliff is there and I doubt Amtrak wants people near that CIH. The City of Newark can dream....can't it? I assume the PATH extension will be a separate right-of-way - over McCar...

In regards to Atlanta, until they run more trains, I'm not sure a better station really matters. What the current one needs is better parking (though the deal with the Mason Lodge does help) and honestly, a 2nd set of stairs/elevator to the platform. That said, if they do move, they absolutely need...

Just wondering - Amtrak's Auto Train needs a subsidy, does it not? Would it be possible to make it or other routes profitable? If not, what public purpose does it serve? Does it or other potential routes take a significant number of autos off the highways?

They went bust, Mr. SRY. How is the business model any different today? That was 1979. Since then, we've seen the fall of communism, the rise of the internet, the rise and fall of the compact disc... Many things have changed so much we wouldn't recognize that era. There were also so many what-if's ...

Yeah, no way in hell. New York Penn Station is not that terrible. It's a windy mess of corridors, but we're mostly used to that. Trying to funnel all of NY rail service into Grand Central would be a ginormous mistake. Keep in mind, back in the day, there was a proposal for a big terminal at 51st St...

When the Second Avenue subway was on the table in the 1950s, there had been a plan for what later was called the Queens Super-Express. There is a map of it on-line that I'll have to find. Anyway, it included rapid transit service along the Rockaway Beach branch. The service would have been: Rockaway...

As an out of towner I'll add Richmond Staples Mill to the list as well. I know it offers parking and is convenient for folks in the North burbs but that location has discouraged me from visiting Richmond for the past 20 years -- it was always just too much of a pain to get from the trains (coming f...

My first impression is that ridership without a direct connection into JFK looks poor. It's possible that the line would have to be opened in a single stage to the airport if it's to be justified at all. The second issue is that the LIRR probably will have the capacity with Grand Central access open...

I think I’m thinking of the NJT ALP-44s and Comet IIIs, which are unusable & unsellable due to Hurricane Sandy, and unscrappable due to what I believe are Federal funding requirements. That would be an FRA grant though. I thought the NJ Transit equipment was eventually repaired, bit off-hand I'...

I found this about a DRPA waterfront light rail project ten years ago.

I can't find anything about a specific rejection; it seems to have just faded away.
