Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

I think the data sources tell two sides of the same story. Interestingly, Portland (which had a nice recovery--523k in FY23 vs. 375k in FY22) is still well below its high water mark of 673k in 2010. To complete the Oregon picture, Oregon City also hit a record at 16k in 2023.

The new service should be downtown and make it easier for Bradley University students to use. Plus, we could use this as an excuse to get service back to Chillicothe. For reasons of Bradley U, downtown is a good idea. I guess there is a former Rock station nearby. Doesn't exactly look like walking ...

https://wsdot.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2023-04/Amtrak-Cascades-2022-Performance-Report.pdf According to the 2022 Cascades Performance Report, 46,000 passengers rode within the Eugene to Portland segment while 45,000 passengers rode from somewhere south of Portland to somewhere within the Portland...

Beech Grove was Big 4/NYC, then PC--not PRR. Some years ago a state legislator in Michigan decided to try to force Amtrak to move the Beech Grove work to Michigan (maybe the remains of the MC shops at Jackson--I don't remember) in exchange for the state providing more money for the Wolverines and ot...

Fourteen plus years since this thread began and not much has changed. The ex Big 4 line from Kankakee to Lafayette belongs to shortline Kankakee, Beaverville and Southern and has since 1977. (The ex Big 4 station in Lafayette was jacked up and moved some years ago to the new CSX/NS alignment along t...

Maybe we should start a separate topic on "how to improve Syracuse", but I'll leave this here for now. Railjunkie's comments led me to taking a closer look (at least via Google maps) at the station site. It's right next to a wetland that feeds the lake. I can see where the sinkage problem ...

Thanks for the reminder of the name. After googling and looking at some pictures, it looks like the plan was to make the platform an island, with OnTrack on the south side of the platform, not north of the current tracks as I suggested above, but NYS&W never laid track into the station.

Railjunkie, thanks for weighing in. I thought that was the case (about tracks being on the "wrong side" from the stations but wasn't 100% sure. The platform for Rome is an island and I think the old NYC tunnels are still there, use them to access the current platform. The rest of them may...

It all depends on where your interest lies--academic, popular, the companies, the trains, stations travel. In addition to what's been mentioned, I have some suggestions: If you have an interest in stations, The Railroad Station: An Architectural History by Carroll L.V. Meeks remains foundational. An...

1. On topic post. So there are two trains a day from Washington to Roanoke, and two the other way. The morning train out of DC does not stop at Burke Center; the afternoon train does. The morning train from Roanoke stops at Burke Center; the afternoon train does not. I assume the morning train from ...

They should take a lesson from the other Gateway Station (St. Louis). While the current station was being built, they threw up an “interim” replacement for St Louis Union Trailers. The interim station is now a crew/commissary building IIRC. I assume such a building in Charlotte would disappear with ...

On another NC note, how much freight is CSX running now on the S-Line between Raleigh and Columbia? I thought I remembered hearing that it was pretty sparse north of Hamlet. Is CSX committed to maintaining the line? If not, It's hard to see that route surviving as a passenger line. There's no anchor...

Real life thought experiment: earlier this month, we drove from NOVA to Lynchburg (actually we went up into the Blue Ridge beyond Lynchburg, but no trains go there). The distance was give or take 170 miles and Apple Maps tells me that, at this light-traffic hour, the actual driving time is 3:05. Let...

IIRC, various localities in Indiana joined with the state for a while to fund the Hoosier State for a while. That said, I agree that state funding is better than locality funding any day.

I found the 1997(!) study that the state did on service to WNC. (There was another study in the early 2000’s.). The preferred alternative even then was through service to Raleigh via Salisbury (although they would have to do a short backup to actually serve Salisbury). The only other option recommen...
