C&O docks in Toledo

When the Hocking Valley and Columbus & Toledo combined, they were using the PRR Olive Street terminal. Sometime after 1899, the C&O constructed their own docks on the east bank of the Maumee ( north of the LS&MS bridge and south of the W&LE bridge) and finally moved to mouth of the Maumee at Presque...

Getting between Amtrak Buffalo to Via rail

Can any of you advise on public transit from Amtrak to Viarail? First, where is the Buffalo depot for train #48, Exchange St or Depew? Second, is there a bus from the ATK station to the GO station at Niagara Falls or close to either station? Should be making this trip on a Sunday, arriving @ 9 A.M. ...

Kim Un arrives somewhere on a train. Is it Hanoi?

News shows the new Un getting off a train yesterday. Was that Hanoi or Dong Dang? I noticed dual gauge track in the video news clips. The train was standard gauge, but I'm not sure it was UN's Green Train.

Rail route North Korea-Hanoi?

The new Un is on his way to Hanoi in his private armored train. Is there not a gauge change at the China border with N Korea? In "Riding the Iron Rooster" the line in Southern China to Viet Nam was narrow gauge? And I thought the narrow gauge continued in Viet Nam. We know Kim has used his train to ...

RI Emp tt for Chicago pre-LaSalle St Station 1882-1904?

Does anyone have or know where I might find employee timetable(s) for the Rock Island into Grand Central Station? This would be the time period 1882-1904. I'm specifically looking to see if the Nickel Plate had local trains scheduled in that time frame. We at the NKPHTS do not have any emp tt's prio...

Re: 2/12/44 - ASHTABULA, OHIO

The Pennsy guy was not a detour. The PRR moved empties over the Lake Shore between various lake ports to handle traffic coming off the great lakes. In this case moving empties from Erie to be loaded with stock pile ore at Whiskey Island in Cleveland. This saved lots of empty mileage and got more ore...

Re: 1/25/56 - WEISBERG, INDIANA

With the flagman dropped off at the depot, was there a plan to get him back onto his train? Would the head-end crew know he was off the rear end? Was there a point further along where the two trains could close up for the transfer? If not, might the conductor have to go back flagging if they stopped...

Re: 1/25/56 - WEISBERG, INDIANA

If you were conductor or flagman in this situation, in pre-radio days, you were really playing a guessing game about what to do. When the train stopped, you had to guess if it were stalled or was there another reason to stop? Do you just wait for the power to take slack or send out a flag? Do you kn...

Must see & ride in Montreal?

I'm making a rail trip on Amtrak to Montreal from Albany. I'll continue to Moncton or Halifax. That means I have at least a 24 hour layover in Montreal. I do have the flexibility to stay in Montreal 2 days. Rail Expo looks like a must. What commuter lines or other rail side trips are worth taking? A...

Re: 12/18/65 - WORTHINGTON, OHIO

The DS used to issue a line-up of trains to whomever needed one as they went about their duties, maybe not on this division? Since the signals on this line only illuminated when a train entered a block, the flagman should have keeping an eye on the ones N & S of him. Once he saw an indication, he sh...

How much employee experience was missing on this incident? A derailment spotted, train at 10 mph. Employee A can't get attention of rear end crew, but does not think to open angle cock on slow moving caboose to stop train. Employee A reports to employee B who "doesn't see anything" so he highballs t...

Re: 10/17/30 - CLEVELAND, OHIO

Both those moves were shuttles behind passenger power between the Lake Front and Linndale. The westbound had two cars of mail to add to the passenger consist it was picking up at Linndale. The eastbound had a baggage car (likely with end door) of theatrical material headed toward the Lake Front.

Re: NOV. 7, 1962 - PAN, OHIO

While there is no question flagging nor torpedos were not provided, part of the problem was poor dispatching. At that time there was a second shift operator at Phillips and no where else between Minerva and Dillonvale. So the RR relied on the closely spaced train crews to work it out in a curving hi...

NYC on NKP(W&LE) between Linndale & Campbell Road CLV

Would any of you have photos of NYC interchange trains working between Linndale (Knob) and the Campbell Road Yard of the NKP (W&LE)? NYC power often laid over at the NKP roundhouse.
