This was something that DVARP had fought for to provide service to a line that was closed for the Railworks project but because of low ridership this was not repeated during the 4 month 1993 shutdown period... During both Railworks shutdowns there were two peak period runs from both the Lansdale/Do...

John Pawson.

As usual, he backed up his points with specific evidence: in this case the slip switches retained in 16th St. Junction and the reverse curve on track 4 at Temple.

515, right at the station. I was on board. Appears to have been a fatality. Passengers off 515 were evacuated onto 4815. Protect for 515 covered stations from Center City to Thorndale.

High platforms. Can't do them(*) if freights are regularly using the track due to high/wide cars.

Two locomotives

If SEPTA can use a diesel engine to pull electric cars, why can't they purchase regular diesel engines, and not expensive dual-mode units, station them in Norristown and Lansdale, for example, and when trains heading out from the city arrive, move the diesel engine in front of the electric cars? Is...

Through service to New York (with a 15-25 minute layover to change ends and for schedule padding so there won't be a disruption to NEC dispatching if a Keystone gets to 30th St. late) is at the expense of through service to Center City. Remember there was a sharp ridership drop when the Keystones we...

You are correct. The consist that becomes 328 starts its day at Media yard, where the previous night it is scheduled to be made up out of the two cars from 395 and two of the five cars from 393. Obviously plans have to be changed some days, but that's what is scheduled. I can't tell you whether or n...

While the Philadelphia ridership of the Clockers was much less than the NJ ridership, the reason NJ Transit took over direct operation was so they could use their own equipment (once they had enough) and significantly increase seating capacity. Before then, NJT paid Amtrak for part of the service co...

How about the nepotism that goes on at SEPTA? I'd personally love to see the payroll records to see how many family members, cousins, etc were all hired because they "know somebody". There is little or no patronage hiring at SEPTA (unlike other agencies such as the Turnpike Commission and...

Nobody said anything about Silverliners on the Harrisburg service (except Ed Tennyson, who actually had the Silverliner IIIs designed with rest rooms and left-hand operation for just that purpose). Contracting for operations does not mean contracting for equipment. Equipment can be leased or purchas...

Actually, the concept of having SEPTA operate the service under contract is something DVARP suggested. SEPTA's unit costs are lower than Amtrak's, their overhead is lower (Amtrak is trying to use profits from state-supported services to support the national network), and there are potential efficien...

There are crossings arranged such that if an approaching train is traveling at less than a predetermined speed when passing a predetermined point before reaching the crossing, the gates will not go down, and the train is then required to stop at the station and activate the gate before proceeding. ...

I liked the named trains. They added some spice to the schedule and were reminiscent of a by-gone era. I'm not sure how often riders referred to their train by the name. DVARP and CAC liked them too and encouraged them to be expanded to the other super-expresses, like the West Trenton train that sk...

If I go birch at them about the Route 78 Bus Train , will they actually listen? Is it even worth my time? You mean asking for a train at those hours? 1--they will listen. 2--they've probably already done the math, so responding to the suggestion will be as simple as plugging the current numbers int...
