I'm pretty sure the IRM is only using their E5 with the Nebraska Zephyr train set. I don't think the original power car is used at all.

MBTA went with new Korean-built Hyundai-Rotems because they were reported to have the best reliablity of the existing fleet; I don't suspect they'd be able to get away with another purchase without a competitive bid process, but if they did it'd almost certainly go to H-R again. I would also think t...

The 700s and 1700s have all just been rebuilt. They aren't going anywhere for a long time. I would assume the 900s are next to go for rebuild- they're starting to seem pretty tired with nearly opaque windows, very worn interiors, and none of the electronic signage that the rebuilds and newer cars ha...

The viaduct was not replaced in the 1990s.

The link to the project which I added to my post has a graph which lists the various roads involved. CSX isn't one of them, though.

Who's going to buy out what's all but certainly a significantly money-losing contract at this point?

Meanwhile, Boston is nearly back to pre-pandemic ridership on commuter rail (although this data carries the caveat that ridership on the Newburyport line is heavily swayed by Halloween season tourism to Salem, MA.) https://www.mbta.com/news/2023-11-17/commuter-rail-ridership-reaches-new-post-pandemi...

These are run with the GE P32AC-DM which is a dual mode engine, which can run on 3rd rail, with the diesel shut down, for the trip into GCT.
