Re: PRR diesel retirement/scrapping/sale records?

I would try the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg or the Railroader's Memorial Museum in Altoona. The former is most likely to have those records, and if not, they probably have an archivist who is familiar with the collections of other organizations. Good luck.

Yard at Safe Harbor Dam

I was looking at pictures of Safe Harbor and noticed that the small highway truss bridge spanning the creek has rails on the deck, set into the pavement. A little research revealed that at the time of construction, ancillary railroad tracks were laid to bring in supplies, but I could not find any sp...

I can't believe I missed it by five years. Thanks for posting the article. I guess there's no reason to think that the tunnel would have proved useful in the future (the extant Reading trackage already connects Pottsville and Saint Clair), but it's sad that such an interesting relic was lost so rece...

Tunnel between Pottsville and Saint Clair, PA

by Highball116 ¦  Mon Feb 23, 2015 9:03 am ¦  Forum: Pennsylvania Railroad ¦  Topic: Tunnel between Pottsville and Saint Clair, PA ¦  Replies: 3 ¦  Views: 4613

This weekend I was in Pottsville and tried to find the tunnel north of town, which went under route 61. I found the right of way on both sides but it looks like the tunnel was filled -- no sign of any portals or anything. Does anyone know when that was done and why?

Thanks,
Toby

I found a record of the Penny's application to abandon the mainline in Williamsport. The record is dated 6/8/61 and requested permission to abandon .75 miles between MP 249 and 250, which is Allens tower to approximately the passenger station in Williamsport. The record is page 173 in this document,...

Thanks for the link -- the timetables are much clearer than the system map. In the aerial photos from Penn Pilot, it looks like there was a track that looped around from the Minersville Highway eastward to the PRR main. It joins the PRR south of the west portal of the tunnel to Saint Clair. I can't ...

I have seen that website -- lots of great pictures. It sounds like the system map doesn't accurately represent the system as it was.

Lehigh Valley in Pottsville, PA

The Lehigh Valley system maps show that there was continuous trackage from Pottsville to Delano, but I've looked at maps and aerial photographs and see nothing of the sort. I know the LV and the PRR had a straight-line junction near New Boston, and that the PRR used trackage rights over the Lehigh V...

Re: What trains use the Sunbury Division?

Thanks, Jim! This list is great. I live well south of Buttonwood, so I guess I'm only seeing the eight trains. I do have a couple of questions. Is there any way to tell the difference between the NS-powered trains, 412/413 and 30T/31T? Does 164/165 tend to have autoracks in the consist? And one last...

What trains use the Sunbury Division?

I've taken an apartment alongside the Sunbury Division, and I'm curious what the symbols are. There's a CP local that comes through during the day, and an intermodal with mixed freight that comes through at night. Any idea what these trains are, and if there are any others? Thanks!

NYS&W actually did give us some excellent parts. There was (or still is) a junker sitting in Norwich, and they let us take some of the skirting from the front plow. They also gave us some of the locks for the wings, and I think some other bits and pieces. Alas, they had a cracked 23-inch cylinde...

Hello. It's a longshot, but a handful of members at the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society in Milford, NY have mechanically restored a Jordan Spreader to operating condition, with the exception of one chief component. The front plow is raised and lowered by a 23-inch pneumatic cylinder, and ...

Thanks again for the great information. The grade coming out of Shamokin must have been totally unruly. I've ridden the highway there on a bicycle, and my legs felt like jelly by the time I got to Trevorton. I've heard good things about Taber's books; I might have to watch eBay over the next few mon...

Thanks for all the great information. It's amazing that a bridge of that size would only last fifteen or twenty years. Any idea when the line was scrapped all the way back to Shamokin? I assume that was a Conrail job...
