Caboose Insulation Question

I've searched, but, have found no answer. In the days of the wood sided caboose, were
these cars insulated in any way? I guess my question holds for the early days of the steel
cars as well. Any info. appreciated. Thanks.

Re: RR workwear: Discussed here!

To answer "Gadfly" - Thank you for your thoughts. I am not a "foamer", or, a "wannabe" as you mentioned. I am retired after 32 years in law enforcement. I have always been interested in trains, railroads, and such...I find them to be interesting....fascinating at times. Yes, I do know a few folks wh...

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

Leo, the blue light might be used to cycle the traffic lights at that absolutely screwed-up intersection. I have seen them used in other locations (as well as white strobe type lights) to cycle the lights to some type of pre-set configuration in the event of emergency traffic, namely, fire trucks an...

Re: Kalmbach - anybody have subscription problems?

I have never had a problem with my Classic Trains subscription. However, I have never done business with them via email.....it has always been by phone, or, letter....and the service has been excellent. Once, I even wrote them a letter asking for the titles of two articles / stories that had appeare...

Re: Great Railway Reads

I have always enjoyed my copies of S. Kip Farrington's "Railroading From the Head End", and, "Railroading From the Rear End". They cover a myriad of railroads, and, highlight many operating practices, innovations, and equipment of these roads. Both can be easily found on various book seller sites fo...

Re: Shrinking Model Railroader Magazine

I am not sure just where the trouble lies with Model Railroader, or, Trains Magazine. I was a long time subscriber to both, but, eventually dropped them both because of what I felt was a lack of content. When I would see the usual blurbs on the cover telling of the articles inside, then only to find...

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

"Cheap, Sleazy, Xpletive" (CSX...as a friend calls them) pulls this stunt every few years by putting this line up for sale. I don't really think they have ever been that enthused by owning it. They put money into only when they had to, or, when they thought there was going to be a boom in stack trai...

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

Personally, I think the line still has potential. It just needs a railroad company that
wants to operate it, and, provide good service. That is not CSX.

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

Is this referring to "our" line from Syracuse to Montreal, or, just trackage / property in Canada?

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

Maybe posting in wrong place, but, here goes. Was in Massena yesterday and saw a northbound leaving the yard. Two units #s 907 & 911 (?). From my vantage point, I was looking at the fireman's side of both cabs. The second unit had a small (about the size of the old tractor trailer type cab clearance...

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

Does anyone know the car capacity of the Massena, NY yard....as built, and /or, as of now?
Also, at the Massena yard, what is the signal one sees next to the South Main Street crossing - on the "station side"?
I've never seen it display anything but "red". Thanks in advance.

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

Leo, Good question on the runaround. Certainly no more "flying switches" in this day and age! Even if they were simply picking up cars (no deliveries) they would still have to get them onto the other end of the locomotive. After the derailment a few years back between Park Street and Buck Street in ...
