CNJ 4104 In that time frame, ALCO RS-3s' ruled the locals that ran the NY&LB, Freehold branch, and the Seashore branch. During those CNJ days, a local would alternate direction. South (rr west) from Red Bank to Point Pleasant one day, Seashore branch, the Freehold next etc. Post Conrail rebuilt ...

I have instamatic pics of it going through Matawan pulled by two black ConRail stenciled GP38's / GP38-2's. Standard freight power on the NY&LB at the time. The 4-8-4 followed shortly. Most likely the largest steamer to traverse the NY&LB and yes, the weather was not good. Fog and drizzle. C...

FYI

" A bit down the line was where the CNJ & PRR interchanged". While the CNJ and PRR physically connected in Freehold, it was not an official interchange point. Matawan, Red Bank, Neptune, and Farmingdale were.

michaelk Sorry missed one... Yes, one of the major bridges is in that section of the trail between the 79 crossing in Wickatunk and the 520 crossing. I know it spanned a creek so maybe it no longer sound or the google maps photo is out of date. BTW, I know I've seen pis of it online. Kaback? Are you...

michaelk My friend started working for the CNJ in 1950 so maybe it was filled in during the late 40's. Crossings - Yes, the crossings I noted were just the major ones. All others were protected by just a crossbuck. I do believe Camp Arrowhead was on 520. I know this because when I attended Lloyd Roa...

OK The crossings on the Freehold Branch while it was in operation were protected as follows. West from Matawan. Church St., Matawan. Bell on crossbuck. Route 79, Freneau. Flashers. Tennant Road, Morganville. Bell on crossbuck. Route 79, Wickatunk. Swinging Light. Route 537, Freehold. Swinging light....

I asked my friend Bob that very question, were the tanks RR related and replied that he did not remember anything RR related on that side of the tracks and he did not know the function of the building nor did he remember it being RR served. Maybe Mosaic stored the fuel for the kilns away from the ki...

I went to the Historical Areals site and the tank is not there in the 1947 view but is in the 1953 view. In both the 53 and 57 views you can definitely see something (dirt road maybe) leading from Mosaic to the tank. So it looks like it was theirs but for what?

Yes the cardles are quite large and the fence that is trackside looks to be of fairly recient construction. Say from the 50's on maybe. Since there is no road to the site it seems that the only industry that could have any access to this side of the track would have to have been Mosaic Tile. Maybe i...

Mosaic used the Mohingson Run basin as a dump for old broken tiles. You can see the piles on the right in this photo. http://godfatherrails.com/photos/pv.asp?pid=600 There are many other color photos of the Freehold Branch on this site as well. Some I believe are misslabled as being on the Seashore ...

Mohingson Jct was not mechanically controlled from MR. Just a hand throw switch and a Mohingson Jct sign. No tower. All the wyes were within yard limits which stretched all the way to the RT 34 bridge. Yes Hurricaine Connie and Diane effectively removed The Maxim in Aug of 55. It almost removed the ...

I too am trying to model the Freehold Branch. Attached is a file provided to me by Ex cnj employee Bob Hoeft. It diagrams the signal layout at MR. When I started hanging out at the station in Matawan in 1976 the tower had already been removed. My guess would be it was removed soon after passenger se...
