Re: SEPTA Rebuilding for the Future Updates

Show your Key card and get a buck off a hoagie! There is precedent, when Reading Terminal opened in 1893 over the Reading Terminal Market, the railroad's president offered, among other inducements, an apple for the teacher with every school ticket. He also mentioned that the market's "fish are fres...

Re: Kosher meals and contemporary dining

Looks like you got the Kosher meals that are served in a real Dining Car, instead of a Kosher version of the Contemporary snacks.

Positive Train Control collision on CSX

Toledo Blade It was the sort of railroad collision that Positive Train Control was intended to prevent. At a switch where two tracks on CSX Transportation’s line between Toledo, Fostoria, and Columbus converge into one, a train hauling ... north … ran into the cars of a southbound train .... The Au...

TAN: Substitute Gap Filler Train

What really kills me is that they add an extra coach north of Saint Louis most days, and it would make a lot more sense to have that as a standing 755a corridor train and then if the Eagle is late, it does it's own thing rather than delay a bunch of people. On Apr. 5, 1971, I remember PennCentral d...

I am not sure how this is a sign of bleeding revenue because the vast majority of people using Key are buying weekly or monthly passes.
The "bleeding" is because under the Key Card fare increase, passes are no longer Unlimited, but have a finite number of trips on them.

Re: Why do trains spend so long stopped in Washington?

Just before electrification to Boston, Mass., Amtrak timetables allowed 15 minutes at New Haven, Conn. for the Boston section for engine change and splitting or adding the Springfield or Inland Route cars, which were added to the front of the trains, and usually dropped from the rear. New England "M...

Re: Amtrak considers extending Wolverine line from Chicago to Toronto

How did they handle the different car power supply systems ie dual HEP feed on VIA equipment? One way was to use the few Light Rapid Comfortable locomotives that had been tested on Amtrak years earlier, and returned to Via still equipped for U.S.A. Head End Power. At one time, the Via engineer on t...

Why do we prefer the K-frames?
In a discussion of new higher speed catenary in New Jersey, it was mentioned that guy wires used instead of cross beams sometimes require unavailable real estate for their anchorages.

TAN: Hell Gatre fares

Separate tickets to and from New York were often cheaper than through tickets via Hell Gate bridge. The cheapest round trip between New England and points South of New York was the 17 day fare. But, from New York to New Haven RR stations, a 2 or 4 day Round trip was often available at only 25 cents ...

Putting the new sleepers, with their different Roomettes, on a separate train, will lessen the confusion with the older cars, and postpone the evil time when the old ones have to be reconfigured to match the new ones. Some of the Superliners released could go on a Chicago - Washington Cardinal.

Then you have to take into account the maximum speed of the auto racks, which I doubt is much more than 60 mph - the speed the extended train to south Philadelphia will have to average.
The Amtrak AutoTrain does travel as fast as 70 m.p.h. on CSXT, but it is still subject to other speed restrictions.

Re: Amtrak Auto Train Discussion

I suspect some of this is to combine the separate Coach Diner and Coach Lounge into 1 car and add another Sleeping Car, so the train length stays the same. It will also mean that Coach riders on Employee passes don't get free dinner, as urged in an evaluation many years ago.

There's a pile of new T rail on the Northeast corner of Richmond & Indiana Sts. The old rai is still in the street, peeking through the potholes.
