Probably the earliest ones that were built by stagecoach builders...the seats were wood.

It won't do anything to lower property values. Those apartments were built because of their proximity to the Rail Road. Since they've been built, rents in that area have moved higher and higher and property values in the vicinity of the apartments and Main Street area are rising. Unique and historic...

What I was amazed by is how little an opr on CSX was allowed to do on his own. Not one of them would move a train unless I gave them explicit permission. This contrasts with the LIRR when the oprs had far more leeway to work their jobs. BTW CSX did eliminate both towers before I retired in 2011. Is...

Jeff are you suggesting a "co-owned" set of MU's for GCT service? Something that can run on either railroad's 3rd rail? I wonder if that's possible. That might not be a bad idea. I bet that MNCR would be receptive to that but, the LIRR wouldn't. Still, not a bad idea if that is what you ar...

Thoughts? http://www.rethinknyc.org/through-running/ The concept is excellent but the greatest enemy of a project such as the one described (or any of the proposals) is the entity that will approve and fund it....Government. The approval process, funding it and continuing to support it until comple...

Erie-Lackawanna, thank you for the correction. That is what I meant..."insulated joint". I couldn't think of the term when I wrote the post. I'm a little dated in my thought process and revert back to my tribal ways sometimes, when I write. There have been other occurrences on the Railroad...

It's a "controlled" interlocking, with signals. From what it appears, the "foul mark" in the Siding what would allow an eastbound signal be displayed on the Main, was too far east...the wheels passed the mark and "shunted the signal"... but the body of the Engine didn't...

MNR's wreck crew was dispatched today to assist with the cleanup I thought that the LIRR Wreck Crew was "internationally acclaimed"? From what I've read on here, it seemed like they were going to get a reality TV show and have the Foreman run for public office. You sure they weren't dispa...

Now that the Summer is beginning, the Rail Road's costs for overtime will increase due to track work, extra service and equipment shortages requiring movements all over the place at night. The Rail Road will pat itself on the back for it's amazing performance and have employees up for photo ops. The...

The Rail Road is not innocent in this overtime issue. As a matter of fact, it's most likely their own fault that this occurred. In the past, Engineers were typically used for certain Pilot jobs and the Rail Road decided to focus those jobs more on Track Foremen and eliminate the use of Engineers. So...

The guy retired, therefore his year end total is inflated by his sick, personal and vacation payouts. He was probably one to not refuse an hour of overtime, lived on the Rail Road because of it and it inflated his totals. So what? To earn the salary that he did, required hundreds of hours of overtim...

The MTA's real estate department is slow moving and strange - I'm not sure why they haven't sold off some of the ROW tracts near the bushwick end yet, as that neighborhood has become a bit trendy and beyond attractive to real estate developers. Last I checked, there's a former ROW in LIC's former d...

I have a question please. West of Nostrand, at the mouth of the tunnel is the walled up entrance/exit of the old Manhattan Beach Branch. In the 'ole days when it was in operation, did the Branch run at street level in that area or up onto an El? Regarding the 1980's photo of the of the retaining wal...

Hi Dogbert. Great post by the way. To clarify what you wrote, when the line was severed, one end that was connected to the Bushwick Branch was the "LI end" and still an ROW? And the other that connected to the Bay Ridge Branch was Conrail (and its predecessors) and has been sold off? If th...
