Re: Downeaster-related trackwork and upgrades

PanAm crew was working parallel to Route 1, between Highland & Grant Roads, the site of the old Hillside passing track, which was disconnected from the main years ago. Wonder if it will be rebuilt for use??? Even of more interest to me, was another crew doing work at Yarmouth Jct., by North Elm ...

The spur into BNAS was active, at least until circa 1975. Before we married in mid 1973, and she moved to Yarmouth with me, she lived in the mobile home park across from the base, right next to the tracks. Freight would come down from Rockland, as early as 4AM, sounding its horn for the grade crossin...

The area that you are mentioning was the site of the old Edwards Textile Mills(a bit of the structures remain). There were spurs off the double tracked mainline on both sides of Water street, about where the underpass is. This would account for what you saw. Also, on the "land side" of Wat...

Interesting that the photos on NERAIL showed a Guilford(PanAm) unit hauling the first consist of scrap gons to Grimmels in Pejepscot!!! I am fairly sure that Maine Eastern is the designated operator of the State of Maine owned Lewiston Lower track, as they are for the line to Augusta and Rockland. A...

Was in the Winthrop area 2 weeks ago, or so, and crews have been removing the rails from the long unused passing track.

While still a horrible incident, the train crew may be relieved somewhat, and the idea of "suicide by train" has thank the lord been discounted.

Mileage wise, the best bet would be to have the car(s) unloaded at Milo, on the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic. It is only 13 miles via Route 16, but requires Pan Am to take the cars to N. Maine Jct, and interchange with MMA. There WAS a branch that ran from Newport on the Pan Am to Dover-Foxcroft unt...

Dick; wonder if the "Dover Job" will occassionally run to Rigby, as PH-1 did at times??? They usually picked up centerbeams of lumber, from "the Nawth" to set out at one of the Wood Structures facilities in Saco or Biddeford. Their cars could be set off and picked up in Dover tho...

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the great paperback, "The Aroostook Valley Railroad", written by Charles D. Heseltine and Edwin B. Robertson in 1987. Published by Robertson Books, it has 92 pages with plenty of photos. maps and charts and covers the "electric days" as wel...

A fairly active day for Guilford in Brunswick, including some cars left by Maine Eastern, that were picked up off the former Lower Road(first time I've seen this in a while). GP-40, 347, with the "mismatched number boards" on cab, arrived a bit after noon with 7 empty cement hoppers & ...

The Maine Eastern freight brought the dining car into Brunswick around noon today, setting it off on the interchange track with 9 other cars. "Geep", #764, then headed back east, light. The diner is numbered CSRX 492, and looks great with its new paint!! :-) Lately, Guilford has only been ...

Looks like they are carrying baled scrap metal. Many scrap yards have hydraulic balers that can compress an automobile body to basically the size of a hay bale; of course engine, running gear etc has been removed.

Will try & get up to Danville on Wed. Anyone notice how the weeds have been allowed to grow up on the ramp on "the wharf track", that Morin Brick uses to get cars of 'fire brick', and other type of brick that they don't manufacture, at their nearby facility??? Most of these cars were f...

Good memories, HH660! In fact the arch bridge you speak of was known as "The Clark Street arch", in the older Portland Terminal Co. Employee Timetables. It served as the "dividing line, between Yards 4 and 5. Yard 4 was anything east of the arch, and last served a lumber yard, where i...

Brooks, not sure about the maintainence, either, but I do know that BOTH PAR and SLR MOW crews, seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time, vs, switch maint,---welding on the Danville diamond, at least when I was railfanning the area. Maybe building "it" up where wheels had pounded it,de...
