Does anyone know what year the restaurant/dining room at Central Terminal closed ?
It was likely beyond repair, but still a loss. Now all that's left is part of the concrete platform which was adjacent to the tracks.
I think it was the overall business climate, taxes, and imports .I grew up in the Southern Tier and as bad as the poverty and poor economy has become there I don't see it as any worse than what happened to cities along the Buffalo Albany corridor.Buffalo went from almost 600,000 in the 50's to 260,000...
Took a hike today along the old right of way looking for artifacts .Found an old Waterbury battery oil bottle, which was used to top off the batteries in track signal batteries .The station unfortunately is on it's last legs, with the rear ( baggage ) area having collapsed and the waiting and ticket a...
I'm trying to pinpoint where the the Erie tanker cars collided and exploded.I know it was in the vicinity of the trestle over Olean Creek, but was it on the west or east side, and how close to the bridge ? Newspaper accounts from that era don't say exactly where.Any information would be appreciated.
Because of the severe drought ,the Allegheny has revealed one of her secrets, the piers of the OB&W are clearly visible where the tracks crossed the river and headed up the mountain.I took these from West River road, across from the sewage plant around 14th st.I believe these were put in around 18...
You're sure right about the shipments being cut back .I've seen long lines of empty ( I assume empty ) tanker cars parked for a long time between Cuba and Hinsdale on the old Erie main and between Cohocton and Atlanta on the old DL&W main.
With concern about Bakken crude oil trains passing through larger upstate NY cities, and Sen.Schumer calling for lower speed limits because of accident fears would it be practical to run them along the more rural ex Erie route through Olean to Binghampton.Could that route handle them and would it mak...
Thanks , on the New York Central ,which we're talking about here, they were known as and advertised as Sleepercoaches. " Rest Assured on New York Central " "
I believe these cars came into use on the NYC around 1959.Were they used on the 20th Century exclusively or on other NYC trains ?
This could have been a Shawmut structure,it's on the same side of the Lackawanna R.O.W. as their line entered , about a mile to the west. The structure sits right on Mill creek.
While fishing this week between Perkinsville and Wayland I came upon an old, abandoned red brick building on the Lackawanna right of way about a mile or so west of Wayland. It's in the middle of nowhere between two swamps.Because of it's fairly large size , construction, location ( right off the right...
It looks to me that they have removed the old 3 light track signals that were so numerous along the old Erie mainline in Allegheny and Cattaraugus county.Does anyone know when these same signals were first installed in that area.? Thanks
That is sad. I've been watching the slow decline of that station for over 20 years. What's even more distressing is watching what's happening to the DL&W station in Atlanta , just to the east of Perkinsville. It's a beautiful station but in the early stages of demolition by neglect, missing wind...
