Re: Philadelphia Roosevelt Blvd Subway

It would be cheaper to built an elevated extension of the M-F line to Roosevelt Blvd. than to tunnel from Broad Street. Tunneling has too many potential obstacles; countless underground utilities and three circles come to mind. Built it on the median with access from the side walks. Run it all the w...

Both the SL-II and SL-III had carbon steel end frames, as does the SL-IV and V cars. The body, center sills and cross bearers are Stainless steel. The IIs and IIIs were retired because it was deemed too expensive to bring them up to current FRA standards. The SL-IVs COULD be fitted with center doors...

A few thoughts from a SEPTA retiree. In thirty years I never once saw an equalizer beam fail; not on a SL-III or SL-IV. I saw broken springs and spring seats, cracked frames on SL-II trucks, but not one equalizer beam. SEPTA knew from the start that the cars were grossly overweight. It can't be help...

It is sitting next to the wash house at Roberts yard. The switch leading to it has been removed some time ago. The once deep royal blue has faded to robins egg blue now.

Williams Reproduction E-60

I just purchased a very nice E-60 at the Greenberg show in Edison NJ. The seller described it as a Williams product but said it was a custom paint job, Tuscan red with keystones on the nose and Pennsylvania on each side. Inside the shell it says WILLIAMS REPRODUCTION. However the chassis is pure Lio...

Could it be GT-1 or GT-2. These were Budd built gas turbine powered cars, one of which was equipped with third rail shoes. Just a guess without seeing the picture.

The ACS-64 arrived at Wayne Junction yesterday. It will be testing along the West Trenton line this week, probably mid day and evenings.

There was a II and a III at Wayne Junction before I retired in early December. I believe 9001, 269 and a unnumbered III are all that remain.

AFAIK the drive axles on all locomotives were equalized. Usually one end of the spring rigging was connected to the engine frame and through links went from axle to axle and back to the frame. Many times the lead and trailing trucks were interconnected to the drivers.

No, the SL-LVs were built with fixed seats. The IIs and IIIs were flip over seats until probably 1990 or so. At first they were drilled and bolted but "somehow" the bolts went missing. Then they were welded for a more permanent fix. As a side note the seats in the Pioneer cars were differe...

I recall a video somewhere of a mixed consist some time ago. Too bad today's transportation agencies don't make everything compatible (as the LIRR did for anything from MP54 to MP75). At least the Budd (II), St. Louis (III) and GE (IV) Silverliners were indeed interchangeable and compatible (not su...

Great info, I'm always asked by newbies "is it 64volts or 72 volts?" If you 'do the math' battery voltage is 64vDC, but charging voltage must be higher thus 72-74vDC.Just as with an automobile battery/charging system where a fully charged battery is 12.5vDC and the alternator output is 14....

The gel trains are currently running every evening except Saturday. They will probably run through November or until most leaves have fallen.
