So basically a good chunk of the old Alphabet Route! Exactly! :-D (Though, there's still the issue of how'd you get the trains to Boston even when you got across the Poughkeepsie Bridge; you'd still have to route via the NEC after getting off of the Maybrook+Naugy in Devon; a routing that I'...

Agreed that significant on-line business is important to a RR line's long term viability (and likely makes it a superior option relative to a bridge route) but there are exceptions where a line can sustain itself with overhead traffic such as the D&H line between Scranton and Montreal ("Th...

This isn't the first time a struggling airline has looked to the railroad industry for managerial talent: Albert V. Casey was an executive at Southern Pacific before he was hired by American, while Delta's Leo Mullin was senior vice president of Conrail at one point in his career. That being said, I...

MEC407 wrote:"give up the ghost" means "die." Might I suggest a different euphemism?
I meant "giving up the ghost" in the sense Hunter's proposal to merge CP and NS died on the table. I hope Hunter himself lives a long and productive life after his tenure at CP comes to an end.

Thanks for sharing the timetable. Even after Agnes, a map in Trains showed Hornell ot Binghamton averaging 27 trains a day in 1974. Ten trains ran on the EL main west of Hornell, while the other 17 ran on the Buffalo Division. The question we should be asking ourselves is not how many trains used t...

If CR had the foresight to keep the Maybrook yard, I bet NS, P&W would be partners by shipping Hartford and Boston traffic through Maybrook, instead of through PAS. Oh, definitely. You'd probably see non-stop Atlanta-Boston trains traversing a Southern-N&W-Reading-L&HR-NH route via. May...

If Norfolk Southern bought out Pan Am, I think a lot of customers would be willing to give rail another chance, since Norfolk Southern has a better reputation for customer service than Pan Am does.

In addition to the Southern Tier, these problems also affected the B&SW and the Rochester Division. The Erie had actually proposed abandoning the Rochester Division between Wayland and Livonia in the 1940s, but shippers and connecting shortlines strongly objected. The Erie successfully abandone...

Matt: would it be fair to say the Erie's biggest problem was that the sources of traffic it had along the Southern Tier were either obsolete (anthracite) or vulnerable to trucks (milk)?

I'm not convinced this isn't just a case of someone reading something online (possibly this very forum) and reporting on it in public. If that individual had made it clear at least in general terms where his information was coming from I would find it more convincing. Significant nonetheless. Same....

The Norlina Sub, the National Limited Route and the Perry Cut-off were all good lines CSX foolishly threw away.

Dewitt made lots of sense back in the 1920's before the big improvements in the Albany area. I think a better question would bey why did Dewitt stay open as a hump yard for so long? Railroading thrives on moving freight and not having cars classified every 150 to 300 miles. Selkirk was and still is...

A map can also be worth 10,000 words--you can practically trace the NYC, Erie, and DL&W by connecting the dots. It's astonishing just how much industry there was along the Central and how little there was along the Erie in general . While the Erie served places like Indianapolis, Dayton and Cin...
