So much for the West Shore route.

Re: Railway Age OpEd on New Operating Plan

One time at Nuremberg two ICE trains from different origins were spotted opposite each other on the platform. Both were destined to Munich via two different routes, one arriving in Munich 5 minutes earlier than the other. An army of suits with briefcases hurried across the platform from one train to...

Re: Amtrak Branding NEC: Acela, Metroliner, Regional

The PRR named every train on the Corridor, and I never heard anyone speak of taking the Legislator, or the Mount Vernon, or the Judiciary--it was always the 8:30, or the 9:30, or the 10:30. The few exceptions were the Congressional (which deserved a name, considering it carried an all-drawing room p...

Re: Getting a last diner meal in the northeast

From Pitter Hotel Salzburg-- The only "Dinner in the Diner" left today from CHI is CHI-3-GBB-372-CHI, and even that depends upon when they open to serve. Back in ATSF days some friends of mine took the Super Chief to Fort Madison, stayed overnight, and returned on the Super Chief the next day. It w...

Re: Viewliner II Delivery/Production

And if you were to do that, I'd suggest something I've argued for years: Make the LSL a single BOS-CHI train and have a separate "21st Century Limited" that ran NYP-CHI along much of the same route, but say 2 hours later, with a few different stops (keep the major cities of course). Completely agre...

Re: Holocaust trains, Netherland railways offer compensation.

Come to think of it, a similar situation has arisen concerning the use of slave labor by railroads in the American South. In consequence of a combination of circumstances, awhile back Canadian National was supposedly going to be sued for reparations as a southern slaveholder resulting from its acqui...

Follow-up question: how was the West Shore row for curves, grade crossings, etc.? I never thought much about it.

Re: SEPTA's New Schedules For August 5 (Or Did SEPTA Discover Time Travel)

True--and if SEPTA put those deadhead moves in the timetable as revenue trips without charging DelDOT it could lead to some delicate negotiations down the road. (I haven't sat down with a timetable, but were some of the Wilmington turns under the previous schedules too tight to be consistently achie...

I don't know what SEPTA uses on the P&W, but if they really are variable-gauge they would be really unique!

Re: Prevalence of private cars?

I believe that back in those days anyone could charter a Pullman car for the price of 18 first-class fares (for up to 18 passengers) between any points where Pullman operated; additional passengers were charged for correspondingly. Much like chartering a plane today, except that in the days of rate ...

Re: Online Customers between Selkirk and Buffalo

I don't see CSX agreeing to spend anything on another route that would be no faster than the present one. Some big bucks would have to be found, and the politicians would have a field day if it were proposed to use public funds to rehab (effectively from the subgrade up) a new route exclusively for ...

Very rare shots--and you can only plan to get them one week a year. (And how often do you see a broad-gauge hi-rail?) :P

Re: Holocaust trains, Netherland railways offer compensation.

Dunno... this was all done under duress and a hostile occupation. What option did the railroad managers and crew really have? Refuse and get shot then and there, probably along with family members; the practice often was to take a number of hostages--50 or so--against future refusals. The result wo...

Re: Holocaust trains, Netherland railways offer compensation.

Now there's a point--a similar situation exists in France and in other occupied countries as well. But as Mr. Benton points out, it still would involve reparations by people who weren't even born then.
