Re: Conway Scenic Railroad (CSRX) discussion thread

It’s interesting that they added the second trip on Sunday so close to the actual date of it. If you go to the trip page on the MBRRE website, there’s no mentioned of the Saturday trip any more, only Sunday. I presume that this is because Saturday has long been sold out? I do wonder how they’ll do t...

Happens enough for me. Deer are a pretty common occurrence. I seem to come across a lot of vultures too. In the past year a friend and I ventured out a ways on an abanadoned rail bridge and there were some sizeable, but young/naive/curious cormorants that allowed us to get pretty close and take pic...

I'm resurrecting this dormant conversation since it was so interesting to read all of these stories years back, and it seems like wildlife populations are getting more and more prominent in populated areas for New England. It seems like the black bear especially, once limited to areas west of the Co...

Subway Line Busing

I'll say right away this this question does involves buses, but it also pertains to subway operations. I have noticed that in two different incidents of pre-scheduled busing, private company coach buses were used instead of MBTA buses. The first was in August when the Commonwealth Ave. construction ...

It’s probably way too soon to know this for sure, but do you guys think that there may be future trips to Whitefield based off of the success of this past Sunday? (Nothing regular of course, but maybe more railfan’s weekend specials, etc.) I sadly chose not to do the 3 hour drive each way in the hea...

I admit that this is getting a little off the Snow Train topic, but has there been any recent developments on the Conway Branch being reopened between Ossipee Pit and Conway? I remember about 10 years ago, there seemed to be buzz about a gravel pit in Madison wanting rail service, and my 2007 NH Rai...

Re: Abandoned Commuter Rail Stations

Is the set of concrete stairs off of the bridge at College Ave the old access point to the Tufts stop? I've tried to locate any traces of this station, but haven't been too successful. The MBTA must have eliminated traces of it pretty quickly after service ended in 1979.

Do most of the booths and exhibitors accept credit cards, or is cash still the ideal payment method?

That is something that I always wondered about; why exactly did the T hide those few LRV’s in the old Tremont Street tunnel? Were the cars hidden in the tunnel damaged from accidents, or had they been butchered for their parts? What difference would it have made if they had stored them behind the Ri...

On December 28, 1976, due to an early winter snowstorm and a severe PCC car shortage, the MBTA sent four Boeing LRV cars into premature service. This would begin several decades of struggling with the cars mechanical components and overall reliability. The LRVs have been gone for nearly ten years no...

Interesting discussion on this topic, especially all of the various things that you might not think about right the top of your head. While rail-fanning is a fairly harmless hobby, there definitely seem to be random things that happen from time to time. As I said in my original post, I find that in ...

Train Fire in Deerfield

I just saw this story on NECN that there is a fire on a train around the area of Keets Road in Deerfield. There was not too much information provided, but from the picture it looks like the fire was in an open hopper car. No word yet if there's any impact to Vermonter service, but since those trains...

Shady folks who seem to be attracted to the unsupervised nature of much of railroad property are the hazard I am always on the lookout for. Most of them turn out to be nice, but I have run into more than a few who were not. Agreed. Most people I've meet on my explorations have been very kind and pl...

There are occasional bears in northern CT in the towns along the Canal Line. A few weeks ago a bear killed a goat in eastern Ellington, which is a few miles from NECR Stafford Springs-first I have heard east of the river. I would think bears are good possibility on CSX and PanAm west of the river. ...

Interesting replies, especially about the snakes, since that's something I don't tend to think about too much when I'm out exploring and photographing trains, stations and abandoned lines. I should probably thing about this a little more, particularly rattlesnakes... One thing that I have thought ab...
