Re: Dining Cars on the LIRR

So I went down to the basement and dug out a 1964 edition of the LIRR's system timetable. I thought there was a mention of a diner on at least "The Sundowner," but alas, not one train was shown to have dining service. On the picture of LIRR train 4, with the Tuscarora Club, that was a morn...

You don't think some yosh will enact this on the strength of my post now do you? Or do you? I wasn't serious about the "No speculation" line. It was to make fun of those who refuse to speculate on anything and therefore feel superior to the rest of us who use a discussion forum for what i...

Running a train is stressful no matter what. No offense, but in my experience, running a passenger train is like a walk in park compared to a 19,000 ton DP coal train on mountain grade. Stressful? Gee, sorry, but I don't see that. Passenger runs were more like taking a day off, in terms of stress f...

Here's a prediction and you saw it here first. In the future the NTSB or other regulatory bodies will require passengers and crew to wear seatbelts. I know that's silly but look at what regulators do. No speculation please. Stick with the facts. Let the NTSB do their work! Seriously though, part of...

Ya busted up the conversation. We're all over on The Metrolink thing for now with everyone else.

With respect to stress caused by a split run, speaking from experience I found it better than working a straight 6 hour run. That's my opinion on the matter. Running a train is stressful no matter what.

c'cgirl , I think you're making some insightful if not excellent observations. I've had several friends who for some reasons just plain had "their lights go out" and die suddenly. They were there one minute, and gone the next. It was determined later that they had unseen until the event me...

Way back in October of '72 there was fatal rear-ender on the IC Electric in Chicago. A few days into the press coverage the media found, concerning the lead train's flagman, "Several instances in his past record of "Failing to Protect the Extra Board." What this means of course that i...

Do you guys think they will ever release the content of the text messages that were sent. The way I see it, that could make a big difference. I don't know that the NTSB's position on stuff like this is but I know they usually play transcripts of black box's after airplane crashes. They did release ...

The first Gallery Cab Car, CNW 151, is preserved and repainted in its original Northwestern paint scheme. It operates often in push-pull mode at the Illinois Railway Museum. It would make a great "prop" for your proposed celebration. Pictures and articles about the acquisition can be foun...

Tommy et al, Thanks for your kind words about my work. In mid-January of 1960 my family moved from a 2-flat to a house a little further south on the South Side of Chicago. At the same time I had requested some pictures from the PR department of the C&NW. The sent me a bunch of publicity items fr...

There was a wreck on Metrolink. Concordgirl... there are a number of people that have worked for more than one or more railroads in their careers. Railroad suppliers and agencies have seminars and conventions all year long with officials of many railroads invited. A lot of us are friends and have wo...

Bat, I do remember them all, as well as the guys in Bob's picture. Actually, most of them haven't changed too much. Oh yes, Martha -- I recall that they sent her chair to the shop because her mass kept breaking the wheels. It came back with coasters that could carry the weight of an elephant. What ...
