What's so confusing about all that?
When several GenSet locomotives are lashed togethier for MU operation, does each locomotive have at least one engine going at all times, or do all of the engines become one big series with one or more whole locomotives shutting down when peak power is not needed? Yes, one a genset one engine needs ...
Two Alco roads that have not yet been mentioned:
White Pass & Yukon
Napa Valley Railway
Only have a moment to post, but... I beleive that a requirement was imposed on the SDP40F acquisition process that stated that the locomotive purchased had to be based on a "stock" design. This in part accounts for the goofy nomentclature. A very common SD 40 with steam heat for passenger ...

I grew curious about the C175 engine family, and did a little reading. While Cat's offical literature seems rather short on real data, I read elsewhere that this engine family is designed to operate at 1500-1800rpm max speed. Read press release here: http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0199-5470824/C...
You are correct. 3516 engines. http://www.nic.funet.fi/index/railways/ ... ccat16.jpg
I had thought that those units used 3606's. My error. (3606 in a marine app runs in the area of 2400hp..)
EMD's 50 series is notorious for high maintenance. UP ruthlessly eliminated most 50 series EMD's as soon as their leases expired. Other 50 series operators don't seem to feel much love for these locos either. Why are so many 50 series still around? I would venture that the simple answer is that unti...
The unit is question is a Lughansk (Russia) made 2TE10M locomotive owned by Kazakhstan. The unit was sent to Erie to allow GE engineers to develop a repowering program that would see additional units repowered by Kazakh Railways. The units origional full carbody design was modified by replacing the ...
It's amazing how little time it took for these units to get used like this: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 58&nseq=33
I imagine that GE and EMD would be very reluctant to release such unproven products like the SD90MAC and AC6000CW on their North American customer base anytime soon. At least not in any quantity. Looking back it's stunning to see how much money was spent on "convertable" locomotives. There...
Excellent point. Many railroads derated their SD45's from 3600 hp down to 3400 or 3200 horsepower in order to gain reliability. NS consistantly bought Dash 9's rated at 4000 hp with the belief that the extra 10% increase in power was not worth a decrease in reliability. Perhaps 5800 hp is the sweet ...
Alan, one reason that you are not seeing North American insterest might the "less than blessed memory" you mentioned. Images of SD90MAC-H's getting scrapped, or maybe even more humiliating, working on short line Buffalo and Pittburgh should terrify any potential buyer. True the AC6000CW's ...
I think is interesting that no one has taken note that the three major Metrolink accidents all have one common thread...willfull stupidity. Placentia 2002: BNSF crew misses approach signal, sees stop signal too late and collides with Metrolink train. Glendale 2005: A person parked vehicle intentiona...
PV systems are ideal for battery maintaining. I will be donating 2 solar panels for use on the URHS's center cab switcher so that the battery bank can receive a constant trickle charge of around 2 amps. I just have to build a regulator to provide the correct voltage. I work for a company that manuf...
