Re: Grafton & Upton Railroad (G&U) Discussion

Then there is the unaddressed problem that most rail yards end up contaminated by chemicals. My impression is that most rail yards are contaminated by chemicals because most rail yards-- especially in New England-- have been on the same site since the days before environmental legislation, when it ...

Re: Amtrak Expansion Plan

I think the future of the LD's are simply transportation, and as certain politicos leave the scene, one route or the other will find itself quite vulnerable. There will be no further LD specific equipment orders other than locomotives, and no expansion of the network. I think there are certain rout...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

Acceptable walk distance is one thing in the summer. However in the throes of the many down east winter storms ? I lived in Manhattan for 16 years. I didn't own a car. During that time I probably took hundreds of trips on local, regional and long distance trains. I don't think it ever even occurred...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

Yes, I specifically mentioned taxis and trolleys in my post and I pointed out that today we have taxis as well as Uber, Lyft, and free hotel shuttles. It's a 30 minute walk from Union Station Plaza to the Portland Harbor Hotel. It's a 45 minute walk from Portland Transportation Center to the Portla...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

A minor nitpick Why aren't passengers allowed to wait on the platform at the PTC? Portland is the only station I've ever been to where staff reprimanded you for standing on the platform to wait for a train. What's the reasoning? Didn’t know about Portland, but this is an issue all along the NEC, an...

Re: Amtrak NEC Inland, Springfield Shuttle/Regional/Greenfield Route

Bradkinson, I guess that things have changed and they are supposed to hold connections at New Haven if possible. That was annoying that Metro North had 178 run before 2172. I thought that Acelas are supposed to be the next priority after Metro North. Sadly, on the New Haven Line, CDOT gives MNR the...

Re: Metro-North Hudson Line Electrification

This got me thinking why the same argument does not apply today in respect to diesels the way it applied back then in respect to steam. Why isn't it cheaper to just make use of electrics to Danbury and avoid maintaining diesels on the New Haven Line? The answer is obvious: for the foreseable future...

Re: Metro-North Hudson Line Electrification

The Catenary to Danbury was feed off of the mainline Substations, had only 1 feederline to the end, passenger service to Pittsfield was down to weekend service(Fri NB/Sat RT by RDC/Sun SB back to NYC) and covered by the FL-9's. The reason was to not do a power change at S Norwalk,so that's why Danbur...

Bronxville: https://www.lohud.com/story/life/food/restaurants/2019/06/06/bronxville-metro-north-new-cafe-bar/1367364001/ ... After soliciting proposals for two sections of the station building, the MTA board voted to approve a lease to Xarupa LLC to turn the station’s interior space into a café and...

Re: Amtrak NEC Inland, Springfield Shuttle/Regional/Greenfield Route

I agree and yes I live about 15 minutes from Springfield. I am just saying that any trips you can get off of 91 is positive. Obviously some people are always going to want to drive further south. But NHV has a nice big parking garage already. I think a better investment would be improvements to the...

Am I right in thinking the current interlocking plant at Tower 1 dates from the mid-late 1980's reconstruction of South Station?

Re: Amtrak NEC Inland, Springfield Shuttle/Regional/Greenfield Route

What train length limits at BOS? Couple of the high tracks are short, but they are generally not used by Amtrak. There is a capacity problem until they buy out the USPS "General Mail Facility" ...or build the North South Rail Link, which would reduce the demand on South Station by allowing trains t...

Re: Boston Surface Railroad: Worcester-Providence Commuter Rail

It's probably means not the Boston Elevated...which ran the subways. That's what I think, too. So a historical reference, and a rather obscure one, seeing as the Boston Elevated Railway was absorbed by the MTA in 1947 and so far as I know didn't even linger on in colloquial speech like the IND/IRT/...

Re: Amtrak Expansion Plan

There's room at Montauk yard for Amtrak to lay over, may need to build a ground power supply, and possibly truck in fuel. Only stops would be Jamaica or Hicksville(Divide tower) for the Greenport connection,Babylon,Speonk,Bridgehampton and Montauk . Consist would be 4 coaches,1 Cafe, and 2 Biz class c...

We can't talk about coaches without talking about locomotives. There has seemingly been no movement on that topic for a while. How long is the current fleet of P32AC-DMs good for?

Well, they got 50+ years out of the fleet the P32's replaced so....
