I think I heard --- or read --- years ago that it was the poorly-run operation of the Penn Central that was largely responsible for the demise of potato shipping on the Bangor & Aroostook. Once the cars got transferred via the MEC and B&M to the Penn Central, they would often sit on the PC's...

DeLorme's Maine Atlas and Gazetteer depicts the right-of-way of the Great Northern Paper Company's Umbazooksus and Eagle Lake Railroad, first operated by "King" Lacroix. The line was abandoned in 1933. The atlas seems to indicate that the track is still there, beginning at the site of the ...

the most realistic thing up north seems an extension of T commuter service to Gardner which is probably the most cost effective solution. If this is ever seriously considered (again), I think it needs to be extended to Athol or Orange. That's where the heavy commuter traffic begins and ends. West o...

It sure would. Ever seen the videos? This thing is spectacular. And if the railway offered help to raise funds to Saint John / western NB food pantries, that would be a publicity no-brainer. Great idea.

One of my long-term goals is to try to trace what's left of this roadbed all the way into [the vicinity of] Chatham. I've explored, to a limited extent by car, the section depicted here.

Rich (or anyone), do you know whether this might be the oldest abandoned railbed in New York?

The easiest way to find the South Athol depot (which is indeed a house) is to take U.S. 202 to Route 122 and then take Meacham Road right into South Athol village. If you head up Meacham for a half-mile or so, Swazey Road comes in from the left at a sharp angle. The old B&A roadbed parallels it ...

Since reading the above post about the alphabet soup of abbreviations for railroad names, I'm a bit confused as to who owns the section of the old BAR between Brownville Junction and Millinocket. If it's the Maine Northern Railway, am I correct in assuming that the CP has operating rights on it? If ...

This is certainly interesting news. I wonder if there's a possibility, however remote, that the Somerset Branch will be rehabbed and revivified? https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/money/business/maine-based-company-is-ready-to-revitalize-the-madison-paper-mill-with-a-product-new-to-north-americ...

Russ, I don't know how I missed that earlier, but I did. Thanks. That looks like a house(?) on the east end, partly built over some of the pilings. I have visited the remains of the old trestle over Saratoga Lake several times, beginning in the '80s and most recently about five years ago. The piling...

Overpass in Eastham, MA

Some time ago I saw an old photo of what I recall to have been the only overpass on the entire Cape Cod branch of the New Haven. It was located somewhere in Eastham, if I remember correctly, going over a side road off Route 6. I have an interest in old wooden railroad bridges, and am wondering if th...
