Re: How do you sleep (quality of slumber) in a sleeper car?

I find a key thing is to try to get a compartment in the middle of the car. That way there is less noise from the wheels and the side-by-side sway is lessened because there is less sway being in the middle (in-between) of the two trucks' movements. One of the reasons why airplanes have first class u...

When I was about ten years old I started to "work" with my father. He was a nurseryman and landscaper from our home land in Gillette. Tom Tabor (Sr.) was a friend of my parents, and I loved when they were at our home for dinner or vice versa. My father landscaped their home in the Morristo...

I grew up in Gillette, NJ and our nursery farm backed up to the DL&W Gladstone Branch. My first memory was hearing a steam engine about a mile or two away. I walked out of the house and down through the property to go toward it (about a third of a mile). I heard my parents yelling my name but I ...

Track 8 used to be the DL&W's "prime" track. It was used for the Buffalo and Scranton trains (outbound). Inbound, the issue was two or three engines along with a mail and/or baggage car taking up lengths. Passengers often had to move forward to be able to detrain. I noticed that inboun...

Re: Gladstone Branch- why so slow?

Couple of comments about speed on the P&D: The West Summit siding used to come all the way west to the New Providence station. That is why the Springfield Avenue bridge has a wide track right of way. I rode the branch more times than I can count. back in the 1950s and 60. From a 1956 employees t...

It's about time this was considered. In the commercial world hardly any company ships trans-continentally or even two thirds across the country anymore. Many trucking companies haul tractor-trailer as far as Chicago and turn the trailer over to rails for delivery to CA or WA where they have other tr...

Most people in the container steamship industry don't expect to all of a sudden run ships across the Pacific, down the west coast of North America, pay $200k plus to pass through the Panama Canal and come all the way up to the U.S. Northeast. The trip is too long, requires too much fuel, and does no...

HB-5 and #15 both going westbound. Okay, I found what might be the answer: Greendell (11.87) miles west of Port Morris Junction had a siding with a car capacity plus engine and caboose of 136. The might have been where #15 passed it both going westbound.

I do remember a long siding there. In fact, from my many rides to Scranton and back sitting in the last seat of the observation car (#3 and #6 round trip was only $4.75 from Hoboken-Scranton and back on Mondays through Thursdays), I have a photo somewhere of it taken from the train. On that ride we ...

The D&H interchange was quite substantial in Port Morris Yard. Also, it served locals from Philipsburg and east on the Boonton Line as well as runs as far east as Summit (picking up and dropping off some to and from the Gladstone Branch). And, I imagine one or two cars for the Rahway Valley. A l...

There is so much conversation about TSA being more about the theater of security than there is in actually preventing bad things. Too, we seem to be always closing the barn door after the animal got out (like now all the shoes have to be scanned separately, etc.). I actually laughed at this video th...

Beautiful shots, great capture of light, and perfect composition.

Side question: what kind of camera and lens did you use for these?

Thanks for the pix!

I have an iPhone3. I delected it and reloaded it. It seems to be working. Thanks much! It's a great diversion in very boring meetings. A few weeks ago when I first got it, I even played with it on a flight between Hong Kong and back to LAX. Nice to have free wi fi in first class while in a bed under...

I lived in North Jersey for many years and operated MUs on the Lackawanna in the 60s. We now live in Arizona where I now work. I got the app and thoroughly enjoy it vicariously as to what is running at what time and to look at the schedules compared to what I remember them as. About a week ago, it s...

He had come from being the head of Amtrak operations adn earlier the Milwaukee Road as VP of Transportation....
