Re: Wye moves in Montreal?

A common move in Montreal and could be any train. For example, a train from Quebec City continuing onto Ottawa will arrive in Gare Central with the locomotive leading. Departing….it will back out to the Victoria Bridge (it doesn’t actually cross the bridge…just far enough to clear the points)….then ...

Yes, I'm in Portland, and while it won't be the same as seeing what the B&M looks like facing forward, that VIA trip does sound fun!
Too bad the CAT wasn't still running (as well as the Dominion Atlantic Dayliner) and you could have put a nice round trip together!

Re: Ocean View Question(s)

I'm still broken-hearted that I didn't ride it last year on the Downeaster. :( From your profile…..it appears you’re in Maine so a 5 or 6 hr drive will get you to Montreal or Moncton…..then you can sample a Dome ride on VIA’s 'Ocean'. Come on up! These are Budd 'Short-Domes'...with a great forward ...

Another big GO Train Increase including year ‘round weekend service to Niagara Falls: https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/go-transit-adding-dozens-of-new-train-trips The number of GO Trains now being offered is really getting amazing especially on the 60 mile Lakshore with some core segments havi...

Re: Amtrak considers extending Wolverine line from Chicago to Toronto

Now, that said, it got me thinking that once this service is operational, Amtrak/VIA might as well start looking at Detroit/Buffalo service...... Detroit to Buffalo would be great but nearly the entire former New York Central/Penn Central route across southern Ontario (via St. Thomas..15 miles sout...

Re: Amtrak considers extending Wolverine line from Chicago to Toronto

The Maple Leaf has always used Amtrak equipment but it does become a VIA operated train in Canada with VIA crews and the food items are changed out in the Café…..Coke in Canada and Pepsi in the US!! The International was different. Both Amtrak and VIA provided the equipment. You could even find VIA ...

Re: Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway

A couple of recent shots at Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. The CB&CNS between Truro (interchange with CN) and Port Hawkesbury, about 110 miles still sees regular service. The 90 miles beyond Port Hawkesbury to Sydney is out of service and hasn’t seen a train for about 5 years The NS Government is pay...

Narrow-gauge ‘Caribou’ - 50 Years Gone!

A bit of CN nostalgia…..and also Railfanning of what’s still to be seen along the old abandoned narrow-gauge railway in Newfoundland It’s been 50 years since CN’s 3’-6” gauge ‘Caribou’ completed its last run across the Island of Newfoundland between Port-aux-Basques (Port oh Bask) and St. John’s ove...

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

With pre-clearance in Vancouver there can be no other stops between there and the border. If a new stop was implemented in Surrey…..the whole idea of pre-clearance is defeated and would require a Canadian CBSA inspection in Surrey (n/b)…..and full US CBP in Blaine (s/b). That’s why you won’t see pre...

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

This is why I am so perplexed at Amtrak’s choice to offer meals in boxes: it can easily do so much better with food prepared elsewhere and loaded onboard to be reheated. Amtrak, just give us what airlines do and I’ll be happy. Dinner (pork loin) and Breakfast (quiche) on VIA’s Ocean…..prepared by a...

Re: Detroit-Toronto possible?

Back in the 1980's, A Via train passed through upstate Maine. US Border control was done on the train, A pretty casual chat and check of documentation....... There were different procedures in handling the "Atlantic" over the years. When it was a Canadian Pacific train there was usually just a curs...

Re: Detroit-Toronto possible?

What was the past practice on the Niagara Rainbow ? Did Canadian border control and customs take place enroute or did the train stop at Windsor (CP)? When I rode the Niagara Rainbow from Detroit to Fort Erie, Ontario in November 1977. Canada Customs came aboard in Windsor and asked me a couple of q...
