Re: Millville Yard

Sorry...haven't been on this board for a long time. As a former Millville resident, my recollection is that the station ran parallel to High Street near its intersection with Broad. It was essentially on High. The yard was to the east and northeast of the station, running to Second Street to the eas...

Wow! I had no idea there were a lot of third rail grade crossings still in use today. Will have to look for some pictures. Thanks so very much!

Did a bit more digging and although it's probably not news to any of those who've posted here, thought the following link to a discussion on the New York Subway group's site might be worthy of inclusion. http://talk.nycsubway.org/perl/read?subtalk=163612 From the remarks there it seems the electrifi...

Makes sense...thanks.

Besides Gloucester, were there trolley wires elsewhere?

And, is it the case that electrification ended at Millville (excluding the Atlantic City line from Newfield to Mays Landing, of course)?

Thanks once again...really appreciate it. Haven't been back there in many years...in the Midwest now. They could make it through short gaps if the train were long enough to have at least one car make contact, of course, but on short trains, coasting would work too. Lots of contemporary third-rail sy...

Thanks for the prompt replies...they were really most helpful. Spent my early years in Millville, but wasn't really old enough to be aware of the railroad until the early 1950s, so missed the third rail operations. As mentioned, it seemed to me my dad had said there'd been a third-rail in town, but ...

It always seemed to me that my dad had mentioned PRSL having used third-rail power for some of its trains, but it wasn't clear to me that this was the case. Based upon the remark in the following thread, it apparently was. http://railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=97&t=42085 Interesting. In add...

Yes, thanks very much. I'd found these too while searching for ML-8s. Although Armstrong's Plymouth was green, it seemed most similar to the Parr Terminal one shown on the page you linked. Short, stubby exhaust stack, small headlight right over the radiator, beefy grill, and it seems I recall a sand...

Thanks so much for your very prompt reply. Had guessed that what the people at Armstrong called the "dummy" was a Plymouth but the memory, that of a six year old over fifty years ago, had become vague. I did recall a grill in front of the radiator, the exhaust stack having been real close ...

As kids in the mid-1960s we were wandering in the wooded area south of the Black Horse Pike and east of Route 50, and ran into what looked to be a railroad right-of-way. We went to the courthouse in Mays Landing to see what we could find out about it in the property records, but came up blank. Recen...

Millville Armstrong Cork Spur

Many years ago I lived next to the spur that served Armstrong Cork in south Millville. Recall it being drilled by steam locomotives and later, diesels, which I assume were Baldwins. Armstrong had two light industrial locomotives that were used to bring cars from the spur into and out of their plant....
