Re: Proposed Norfolk Southern NS Canadian Pacific CP Acq/Mer

There has been no formal bid yet by CPR for NSC. Because NSC has rejected the terms of the proposed "merger," the only avenue open to CPR is a hostile bid. Once that occurs (if indeed it does), NSC must open the bidding to other interested parties. BNSF with Warren Buffett's deep pockets a...

The Tuesday closing price for NSC was $86.97. The current bid and asked prices are 91.50/91.61. This is at 09:00 before the market opens. The high price for the year was $117.64 on 11/26/2014. If EHH is deadly serious and makes a formal bid for NSC, it will cost CPR a lot more than it's offering in ...

I wouldn't worry too much about CPR's management. They may hang on, but I'd be surprised if they could do a cash only deal. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board could easily finance a cash-only NSC bid by CPR. I understand that they partially financed the recent purchases of Puget Sound Energy,...

Many merger rumors are started by speculators out to make a quick buck. Investment bankers are also part of the game. They are the ones who initiate most of the big mergers by buttonholing corporate bigwigs and touting the advantages of a merger with another company and incidentally, how generous th...

"Caterpillar Inc has decided to close its Electro-Motive locomotive plant in London, Ontario, and lay off at least 450 workers following several months of unsuccessful contract negotiations with the Canadian Auto Workers union. Read the rest here. Edited by a Moderator (fair use rules) 2-6-12-...

Is there a big fuel efficiency advantage in using natural gas in a turbine versus using natural gas in a reciprocating engine? The main reason I ask is because the PowerHaul P616 diesel engine from GE is derived from the Jenbacher J616 natural gas engine. I don't suppose it would take much for GE t...

There have been major advances in turbine technology since UP experimented with the technology in the 1950s. I think that the dust and mechanical shock problems are exaggerated, although it must be admitted that the Textron Lycoming gas turbine engine in the Abrams tank required a lot of maintenance...

A new world record was set at Shcherbinka outside Moscow on September 7 as the world’s latest experimental gas turbine locomotive, the GT-1, hauled 170 freight cars weighing a total of 16,000 metric tonnes (17,637 English tons). This milestone took place at the All Russia Railway Research Institute’...

There are reports of major wash outs on parts of the NS southern tier route and parts of the CP Sunbury sub are flooded south of Wilkes-Barre. Is there a possibility that the old Buffalo line route will be reactivated for through service from Buffalo to Enola during this emergency?

Thanks Car Floater. I never heard of the "Allen Wood Steel Co." Interesting. The Tahawus Mine produced "ilmenite" ore which was mostly magnetite (iron ore), which was separated and concentrated at the mine. It contained no lead although small quantities of vanadium were also foun...

Also don't forget that the Lehigh Valley was controlled by the Pennsylvania R.R. Bethlehem Steel used to get iron shipments from the Philly docks. The Reading brought it up the Perkiomen branch and later via the city of Reading through Allentown. But the Pennsy also shipped ore to the Bethlehem. Th...

Speaking of the Bloomsburg & Sullivan branch, I traced it as far as the old lumber camp of Jamison City, but there is no trace of a roadbed past there. There is a rumor that an overturned steam loco lies somewhere near there. Any further info is appreciated.

The Mt Tom coal trucking operation was a trial run only, I believe Mt Tom coal is moving up to Gardner, then over PAS to Deerfield, then down the Conn River to its facility on the line. Its amazing that such a trucking event occurred, seeing as how the tracks run through the plant, but that's Guilf...

My dad, John G. Kneiling died in 2000. Indications were he didn't approve of the way the hospital was run. We always thought he worked for the Martian CIA. I thought that your dad was out to destroy our beloved railroads when I first started to read his columns. As I recall, he was obsessed with av...
