The NYT article fails to mention that grain exports from Ukraine to all neighboring Eastern-European EU members (Poland, Slovakia, Hungaria, Romania, Bulgaria) are currently legally banned. This is since the massively increased Ukrainian exports were ruining the markets and filling up depots there -...

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/planes-to-trains-europe-climate/index.html Seems strange to me their is no vat or carbon pricing on air travel. Carbon pricing on air travel is being introduced EU-wide starting in 2024. Or rather, airlines will no longer get the certificates for free that have be...

With regard to this: In April just 70% of its long-distance trains were on time. And even that was an improvement on the whole of last year, when only 60% were punctual; the company’s (unambitious) goal is at least 80%. It should be noted that there are two separate companies. DB Fernverkehr running...

The perpetrators used a standardized Berne Key to access an intercom panel in one of the train cars, then laid the microphone next to a cell phone playing their message. Rail operator ÖBB has filed charges against the two perpetrators, including video evidence. There were two similar cases on the sa...

I also wonder how the China to Europe trains are doing , given the high cost of shipping and driver shortages at the moment. ??? Packed to the gills , I'd imagine. There are new additional connections between primarily Shenzhen and Duisburg (run by Shenzhen Huashang International Supply Chain Servi...

In Jonathan Dimbleby's tome, "Operation Barbarossa," he does not mention the gauge problem. About 16,000 km of track west of the front (i.e. virtually all) were regauged by Wehrmacht troops to 1435mm between July and October 1941 - and regauged back to 1524mm by the Soviets in the years a...

You can find all issued souvenir Euro banknotes on this website (note: this is an informative website. they don't sell them). These notes are issued globally for customers. Most railway motifs were printed for French or Swiss customers. I'd estimate overall maybe 20 out of over 1000 different motifs...

Re: European Freight - Precise or a "Joke"

The maximum permitted length of freight trains in Germany is 2420 feet (740 meters) or 2740 feet (835 meters) on a few routes, and 82 cars, whatever is reached first. Austria limits trains to 2460 feet (750 meters). To add to that: There is a European-Union-level effort to improve infrastructure to...

"Entwurfsangestellte" with an "s" between the two words would be more sound grammatically Just to nitpick - actually, while colloquially most Germans would do it : adding in an s inbetween in the compound word would be grammatically wrong, as it would infer an internalized posse...

The problem with rail over here is going to be frequencies. France can do this because many of these cities probably have 2 or more trains per hour (through some combination of services I'm sure) between them. The original motion would have banned domestic flights if there were competing TGV travel...

Since they're not mentioning it - they're talking about: 2 trains/day Düsseldorf - Cologne - Frankfurt Airport - Nuremberg - Munich -> Not additional trains. Instead they'll be cutting intermediate stops on two trains out of the regular ICE route to create "sprinters". Half the promised 30...

Britain also has no financial stakes in Eurostar at all - they sold their 40% share in 2015 to Canadian and US investment companies. To be fair this is part of a wider lobbying campaign by Eurostar to get some assistance from the UK after they've exhausted subsidy avenues with the French government....

I've only really seen the term in relation to architecture. Could also be that he was e.g. creating small custom 3D model buildings based on an architect's plans for showing off designs. There are companies specialized in this kind of one-off custom architecture model building, nowadays mostly heavi...

Re: Volkswagen/VW Micro Buses: Railroad Buses or 'Gandy Wagons'

There are German equivalents in museums today, they'd be called a 'Draisine'. They weren't a conversion vehicle though, as they weren't built for the rails and would've had a lever system to drive it on the rails. Small correction there: I assume you mean the GBA1 series of "Betriebsamtsdraisi...
