Bonds Lake area, undated glass plate neg.

An old timer (older than me) once told me that the limestone went to the Tonawanda iron plant in North Tonawanda. Maybe that was in addition to the Bethlehem business.

I agree with Railkevin. I think the two (kayaking and train photography) are not real compatible. The biggest problem that I've encountered is that the boat will be constantly moving (wind, current, etc.). If you hear a train coming and set up a good shot, the boat will probably be somewhere else by...

I worked with a former DL&W guy back in the '80s. He told me about that wreck, though I don't remember details as to date and exact location. He said that there was some sort of construction going on at a road crossing (Townline Rd? Over/underpass?). Anyhow, the construction involved a shoe fly ...

Tower Erie 3 was a New York Central tower and was in Tonawanda. If you could see a few more car lengths back along the train on the right side of the photo you would see the bridge over the Erie Canal. My guess is that at that time the train orders would have been issued at the Erie station, which i...

Here is a shot taken late '40s or early '50s of a PM 2-8-0 crossing the NYC Peanut line (Also LV) at tower Erie 3 in Tonawanda. The PM, later C&O use of this trackage lasted right up until Conrail.

Gosh, all that stuff never seemed to bother the PRR!

I saw it going through Sanborn. Didn't get to the crossing in time to get details, but it had an older low nose EMD and a beater wide-cab. Looked to be about 50 cars.

I don’t want to try to steer this off topic, but there is another angle to this story that seldom comes up. Shortly after the wreck someone wrote a letter to the editor of one of the railfan magazines (Passenger Train Journal, I think) that included an old PRR track chart of the area where the wreck...

Sweet! May I put that up on my unfinished-railroads web page? I went and looked at that area on the map. There's quite a valley they would have had to cross just east of Woodlawn Cemetery, where Main hits Van Kirk Road, and a smaller one along Shaffer Road. I should go looking there for abutments. ...

Here is a photo of the roadbed of the P&SB just south of Newfield, NY along route 13. My aunt owned a house that was built partly on the property of the railroad, and that showed on her deed. There was a small creek behind the house, and she said that there was to have been a trestle over the cr...

OK, here's the last one. This is the bridge over the "Little River" in the 1970s. This was also a popular hang-out/swimming place for my brothers and I in the '50s. The international Paper mill along with RT Jones lumber was in full swing on Tonawanda Island in those days and the train use...

Here is a photo of the Ellicott Creek abutment when the line was under construction. My brothers and I used to swim in the ponds that were created when the fill for the embankment was dug out from along the ROW. It was called "B.A.B" or "Bare A.. Beach."
