Another update about something I noticed in recent weeks: Most of the rail around Sherbrooke and the surrounding towns is still 100 lb jointed, with a few longer and heavier (though still jointed) sections on curves. But about a 1.5 mile stretch through the middle of Sherbrooke has been redone with ...

Thanks Fritz! I don't get to the Waterville hill very often even though I'm only a few miles farther away than I was 20 years ago. It's always fun to watch a heavy train on the grade. I've uploaded yesterday's pics on my site - not the greatest lighting but I did get some detail shots of 4023 and a ...

Just saw 394 an hour ago in Sherbrooke and followed it to Waterville, QC. It was the first time I'd ever seen and photographed an SD70MAC of any kind - I've covered almost every other recent EMD and GE model. Anyway, here's what it had: RM-1 804 GP40-3 3804 SD70MAC 4023 6 boxcars 2 scrap gondolas 4 ...

Thanks! Glad to know I wasn't imagining it. You definitely weren't imagining it! I remember seeing spanking-new SD75s and Dash 9s in the late 1990s running past where I lived in Waterville, QC. I didn't start taking pictures myself until after the SLQ M-420's arrived (I was only 12 at the time) but...

I agree, It's like the environmentalists who buy electric cars. Most of the electricity in the grid is produced with fossil fuels, but they feel like they are doing something good. Very much depends on where you are. In Quebec 95% of the grid is hydroelectric. (Ironically, winter issues mean that t...

Cycling through Lennoxville today I caught a very late-running 393 passing through at 14:45, or about 4-5 hours later than usual. RLHH 3403, SLR 3805 (with no slug) and 54 cars. A very diverse mix of car types - perhaps 40% were empty centerbeams and LPG cars, and the rest were a bit of everything. ...

Thanks for the updates as always from north of the border. Not sure if you have any insight but I am curious if CP is upgrading the Diamond/signal system at Lennoxville as part of their CMQ refresh or not. I haven't noticed any changes, but then I haven't recently gone near the signals to check the...

I'm late in posting this, but I've caught SLR 394 a few times recently. The first was on September 3, when I caught 394 coming home from work in Lennoxville, so for old time's sake I went to the hill along Courval road near Waterville, QC, to watch it where I used to watch trains all the time (until...

Caught 394 in Waterville, QC yesterday a little after 6:00 PM, or about 2 hours later than usual: QGRY 6904 SLR 3047 SLR 3035 41 cars With 3 units up front they made quick work of the grade, throttling down as they reached the crest. The first 2/3 was a mix of different cars, while the last 15 or so...

I caught a long and late-running SLR 393 in Sherbrooke yesterday afternoon and followed it toward Richmond. It was led by 805-3805-3035, and by my count (which may be off as I was taking pictures) it had a whopping 84 cars. There were probably 2 dozen salt hoppers (mostly Trinity 3281 cu-ft cars in ...

Saw SLR 394 passing through Lennoxville this evening and chased it to Waterville. It was running a bit late - it was in Waterville around 7 PM. 3805 805 3047 8 centerbeams 14 boxcars (mostly 60-foot) 8 ballast cars 7 LPG tank cars 13 various other tank cars 4 hoppers 2 bulkhead pole flats 2 high-sid...

A couple of recent trains to report: - Wednesday I was biking through Sherbrooke and crossed the Terrill St. bridge as the Sherbrooke local was passing underneath, returning to Richmond. It had 804-3804 and 46 cars - continuing a trend of lots of interchange traffic from the CMQ (now CP). - Last nig...

Re: Canadian Pacific Returns to Maine

CP takes control of the CM&Q next week. What plans does CP have for track work on the line this summer? Any sign of materials or track equipment as of yet? Will a new intermodal train to be added in the short term? How will Searsport work into the system? I can't answer system-wide, but I can s...

CMQ derailment

Just discovered (3 days late) that the CMQ had a minor derailment near West Bolton on Sunday. No injuries and no dangerous goods involved, but Canada's TSB will be investigating.

Saw 394 by chance tonight as I was driving through Lennoxville, QC around 6:10 PM. Had 3007-3805-804 and 38 cars - a mix of a bit of everything, all loaded (or almost). First surprise: The horn on 3007, which I hadn't heard before - and which sounded like a Nathan M3H. 3007 was not running. I caught...
