The 2035 date is also when VIA claim the HEP fleet (so basically the entirety of the non-Corridor fleet) will be unserviceable/unusable. They seem to be setting up a cliff hanger to force the government to commit to an LD procurement for both power and coaches.

VIA 2 has been stopped for several hours, and a rumour on groups.io says a locomotive’s fuel tank was compromised by a collision with an object. As yet, nothing on VIA or TSB social. The schedule tracker claims the train continues to run on schedule but the inconvenient location display of 0 km/h we...

The line is to see a possible 20,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate shipped from Flin Flon to Churchill. The origin is Snow Lake which a long time ago had a branch beginning at Optic Lake, but now the ore is trucked 190km to Flin Flon and concentrated there. The smelter in Flin Flon is no longer in oper...

CN and CP aren’t buying those EMDs with tax dollars, though.

Re: Septa Trolley Modernization - Alstom Fleet

Will be interesting to see how the Citadis works out at SEPTA. In theory, the Flexity Outlook Toronto downtown car was a very close match - tight curve radius, wider gauge, able to use trolley pole or panto - but clearly post merger the Alstom portfolio is in ascendant over the Bombardier one, so we...

Which brings me to my question: given that which route the Canadian arrives by (and subsequently has to depart the next day) is dictated by operational needs even though there is a normal routine, are there any good spots anybody can suggest that are beyond the point (north/west) where the train co...

If the Canadian government is so concerned with carbon emissions, why are they refurbishing so many F40PH locomotives with the dirtiest carbon and other noxious gasses emissions in service in North America today? If you are going to use diesel locomotives, buy some new or used locomotives meeting t...

I assume this proceeding is in pursuance of the north-south connection project described here? https://chicago.suntimes.com/2023/5/17/23727468/metra-looks-to-upgrade-rock-island-commuter-train-line Why is this filing necessary - is it just arcane requirements of railroad law even with two willing pa...

Irish Rail intend to trial direct burning of hydrogen in a 12-645. I’d love to get the real story behind that one, it feels more like “how to get EU grant money to pay for a 1970s locomotive refurb”

New passenger locomotives are kind of expensive with long lead times. They would probably want to buy locos that would pull 8 double-deckers at 79 MPH or even faster to future proof. And they would have to be Tier-IV. So basically would have to go to the back of the line behind Amtrak. Better to ov...

If the writer thinks 601/603 is unusual he should see the Corridor J-trains, which could be one loco-coach combo (like P42-Renaissance) attached to a wholly different one (F40-LRC, say)

My recollection is that F125 introduction was not happy, but perhaps things have improved since. I had been wondering if EMD had given up on any more sales, whether Alstom would offer a diesel-only ALP45 to the various systems who for whatever reason preferred not to go with Siemens/Cummins. Those M...

Victor Wembanyama is French. Maybe he can go on TV about how it sucks not to have trains to get around the region where the commie NBA draft system obliges him to live and work.

I don’t think it’s block working, at least on the long surface portion between Science Center Station and Kennedy Station Portal. But I haven’t been along that portion of the line since test vehicles started running on it
