Mr. MMI, somewhere before I had learned that train dispatching on UP was done with non-Agreement employees. I had further learned that it is "a stop along the way" as part of their Management Trainee program. It also can result in "dispatching by the book" as distinct from "...

There appears to be quite a few Milwaukee Road cars involved. It appears that there might be a switch from a siding to a single main track. The general "lay of the land" and all the vegetation make me think of Milwaukee Road's Kansas City main line. Especially around or below Ottumwa. Just...

Maybe they think the house of cards is close to collapse? They may be running out of places to cut. They are losing volume, but for now have some pricing power to maintain revenue. That can't last. A co-worker said he saw where some analyst, maybe the one you cited, said UP has the highest debt load...

C&NW on it's Chicago - Council Bluffs main line, and IC on part of it's Iowa main line had Automatic Train Control. UP still uses the CNW ATC, although PTC is replacing it. The CNW system only has two aspects, clear and restricting. Before UP added CTC, most areas didn't have wayside signals oth...

I believe it's to replace the current bridge over the Raccoon River at Booneville, IA.

Union Pacific still has turntables in use at Marshalltown, Boone and Council Bluffs, Iowa. They are former CNW, and except for the one in Council Bluffs, still used to turn locomotives on occasion. The one in Council Bluffs is at (and used by) the shop that maintains the business car fleet. Located ...

What Fritz is worried about is production moving back to the US. Factories would most likely be closer to consumers and goods would mostly move by truck. For UP, if it isn't unit train/intermodal type business and/or moving less than 750 miles-they aren't interested. They've had numerous opportuniti...

Fremont power plant on the east side of Fremont. The track running by the plant is the exCNW line into town from Missouri Valley, IA.

Re: MIL? RI Combined Track Quad Cities-KC

What was the reasoning as to why the entire Rock Island was not retained between Ainsworth, IA and Seymour, IA? I've seen references online to the fact that the old MILW line through Ottumwa has grades on it and that it is not really conclusive for high speed running due to many curves on the line....

There is two manifest (all kinds of cars and freight) trains that come from Des Moines and "turn the corner" at Chicago/Kansas City Jct connector. One goes east to Chicago. The other is actually a turn that goes to Boone, exchanges cars and returns to Des Moines. There's one, maybe two (I ...

Oak Tree Inns and their associated Penny's Diner are primarily for railroad train crews. (Not all locations have the diner.) They are open to the public. If you look up their locations on their websites, almost all are located at a UP crew change location. There are a few that appear to be BNSF poin...

Union Pacific's hottest intermodals are sometimes called "birds" (otherwise known as "Z" trains), especially in ex-CNW territory in the midwest. The nickname is derived from CNW's "Falcon" piggyback service from the 1970's, which was a joint operation with UP at the ti...

Of the routes between Chicago and Omaha, which routes were double track? There have been postings online that state the RI was single track west of W. Liberty, IA, but what about the others. C&NW had a second track that was removed later, but what about MILW and CB&Q? Could Rock Island and ...
