Re: Illinois Amtrak Service

I've consistently asked myself why rocketships were needed when plenty of roads (GN, SP, ATSF, GTW, SCL, et al) ran fine passenger trains with geeps and SDP40s. The only answer I can come up with is conceptual job security, as in: "well we can't drop Amtrak now, we just bought them $1b of new engin...

Re: Illinois Amtrak Service

Interesting point, I'm curious what kind of power facility is needed. Can you contract this out to UP or Respondek or TRRA? Or just rotate the power out every week or two? There are plenty of outlying points where power spends a night or two but nothing is there - Pontiac and Grand Rapids. I think ...

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

I think it's important to note that the fundamental reason why Amtrak hasn't done these things yet is because they can't afford to . They don't have enough passengers paying high enough fares to cover their costs. It's just that simple. Until that changes the very best hope for improvement in food q...

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

The existence of a proposal to consolidate cafe services with the diner car is a minor miracle in of itself. Anderson is fundamentally proving himself to be a pragmatist. He's deploying available resources to their highest and best use while finding new ways to cut costs. I strongly agree with these...

Thankfully the "youth of our country" do not share in your opinion of their lack of appreciation for historic preservation.

Re: North America - Oil Transport By Rail

Interesting that the increased traffic never does off completely and is now bouncing back.

Perhaps what's most notable of all Mr. Norman is that rail now seems to have a permanent position as the "flex" option, which previously was done by tanker trucks.

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

See the new website for the Portland West Railway (PWR) Alliance . They appear to be planning for a station on one leg of the Yard 8 wye while continuing to use Thompson's Point. In theory the other side of the wye would be a possible option for a station site. I can't imagine this is what is being ...

Re: The Flying Yankee

I will have to admit to Cosmo's version of the events. It's definitely disappointing to see the project stalled. On the other hand at least it is in a state of arrested development as opposed to active decay. It only becomes more historic (and therefore of greater intangible value) as each ye...

Re: Expanding Virginia's Passenger Rail

Interesting to see advocacy efforts focusing on intra-state service. This effort could have broader implications for other Amtrak routes that might use certain segments as well.

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

That's a worthy point on of itself. If true passengers are willingly taking a 20 minute hit for the sake of comfort. Certainly not in line with how we've talked about this before.

I remain intrigued by the possibility that Portland ridership is soft for other unexplained reasons.

Re: Illinois Amtrak Service

Calling in an extra crew can be done and of the delay is that long you might as well just deadhead them on the next available southbound. Barring that option buses work great in pinch. Hard to substitute a cruise ship for an airplane ...

In many ways it is with the exception of bi-directional operations.
