Re: DeWitt & East Syracuse One Of The BEST Railfan Spots?

Kirkville Rd is one of my favorites. Good parking, 3 tracks, good views both east and west. And the Kirkville detector is right there. Another spot I like Bennetts Corners Rd in Memphis. Parking is right there in the canal trail parking lot. And can see the signals for CP300 to the east and auto 303...

Sad to learn this. My grandmother lived only a block away. As a kid in the late 50's/early 60's we would walked to the station to meet a late morning southbound PRR passenger train. Also got my first cab visit here. The engine crew of a switcher invited a couple of us aboard for the short ride to Fi...

Reminds me of a discussion with a great aunt many years ago. The Peanut (also the LV…) passed along the south border of the family farm in Caledonia. The she would do her monthly shopping in Caledonia by walking a couple hundred yards down the hill and catching a WB train at MAXWELLS – a whistle sto...

When I last saw the Whitcomb (1975 or so...) it was is the process of being cut up.

OTOH the GE just disappeared. Don't know whether it had been removed whole, or it got the torch before the Whitcomb.

I have several GRS signal mechanisms salvaged during the signal upgrade thru Rochester. All show build dates in the late 40's. So I'm guessing the NYC retired their semaphores closer to 1950. Also......my earliest recollection of NYC signals as a young child (mid-1950's) is searchlights were in plac...

Quite simply a flat wick lantern flame fueled by vegetable/animal oil is not hot enough to heat a mantle to incandescence. Further, unless the flame is perfectly adjusted these fuels quickly foul a mantle with soot which effectively ruins it. Note that even kerosene-fueled Aladdin lamps - mantle hea...

The frog at the Pixley siding switch (track #1, a few hundred feet west of the Pixley Rd grade crossing) was removed 2 or 3 years ago.

It's been 5 or 6 years since I've seen any rolling stock - MOW equipment tied down overnight - on the siding.

Also, I didn't realize the 1st bridge was wooden. Pictures of it look like metal. Both bridges were indeed metal as the photo indicates. Despite claims by some, no wooden bridge ever existed here. First bridge was a spindly, cast iron top deck truss affair. 2nd was of more robust steel plate girder...

I too vividly remember that odd warning signal on West Henrietta Rd! I’m pretty sure it was a CPL head with lunar white in all 8 positions (the lenses looked bigger than in a PL). When activated the lamps were lit/extinguished in a clockwise pattern at about 40 revolutions per minute. The lumen outp...

The clearing project continues a good 1/2 mile beyond (south of) Brook Rd. It appears both sides of the ROW are being cleared.

Did this tail track just end at a bumper or was it tied back into the main? Charles - If memory serves (it's been 45 years!) tail track ended in an improvised bumper, a pair of crisscrossed ties a few feet from the end of the rails. The track did NOT tie back to the main. This is consistent with th...

Charles - I have a copy of the track signal chart for the LV between Sayre and Buffalo dated Jan 17, 1971. West of the Genesee it shows double track between the following interlockings : WHEATLAND (mp 391.7) and P & L JCT (394.1) STAFFORD (406.5) and BATAVIA (411.0) WYOMING (432.3) and TIFFT JCT...

That said, I dug into a bit of googling and got 288 hp out of a 1000 lbs lithium ion battery, spec'ed for 56 kWh 375 V, on a Tesla Roadster 2011. Scaling to 4400 hp (that of a Siemens Charger SC-44) you would need about 15,278 lbs of battery, or nearly 7.7 US tons of battery. In comparison, the SC-...

I believe the location near this signal bridge has a number of power-lines nearby that makes removal a risk, so it's easier to just leave in place as it is. Charlie That's pretty much the situation. There's multiple high tension lines tight to the north of the ROW. And a small drop off, then swampy...
