New Diamond Crossing

Hypothetical situation: a railroad seeks and receives permission from the STB to reactivate a fully abandoned ROW (like RJ Cormann did in PA a few years ago. However, the abandoned line once crossed another line at grade. Can the surviving active railroad block the constitution of a diamond or bridg...

Pittsfield Station

I'm looking for information on the Pittsfield, ME station to aid in the restoration of the building. The Historical Society has some info, but we want to see if more is out there. Specifically looking for photos and information about the colors the building has worn, and timeline of color changes. C...

Re: Paper Related Traffic and Cars

Some of the stories about the Old Town mill indicate some interest in starting the pulp mill back up. I find it hard to believe that Carrier, Gardner and Varney would form a JV without a really big upside in the form of wood chip consumption - a lot more than a simple biomass boiler would consume. T...

Re: PAR Interest in CSX MA Branches?

Don’t be so sure about CSX being strategic and paper barrier-ing up their upcoming sales. The consistent word from out of Jax that I hear is that their purge is a short term money grab and they know they can get more cash without paper barriers. These will be outright sales not leases. In fact if yo...

Re: PAR Interest in CSX MA Branches?

Given that the abandoned section of the Fitchburg Sec has been sold to the city to become a bike trail, what use would it be to them? Connecting via the Grand Jct or the old Clinton interchange just won’t work for anything but low volume moves. The Grand Jct is limited to plate C on top of that.

Yard Ops Question

How do you safely operate switchers in a flat yard when you have one working each end at the same time?

Right, I said AYWA not WAAY. They have to go up before they come back.

Re: Portland Waterfront Rail Ops (Yard 8, Intermodal, etc)

A well informed source tells me that there will be 10 JB Hunt boxes on AYWA tomorrow. There is no 53' chassis pool in Waterville so these will ride as TOFC. Possibly returning on the Friday night departure of WAAY. This is apparently a trial for one of the paper mills up north. If successful might m...

Re: LOSA Returns - Dirty Dirt

Erroneous news report. The dirt at Beacon Park is from the clean up of the rail yard and adjacent warehouse area for Harvard.

Re: Wagon Wheel derailment - 1/27/17

Corman did these because P&W was at fault in Gardner - they didn't send their own crane because G&W outsources this work. This one happened on the flour mills' track - they get to pick the contractor.

Easy Newpy, after his internship at Eimskip he held an entry level position at Schneider for 15 whole months - you might as well be talking to Matt Rose. :-)

Re: Katahdin Woods & Waters Rail Access

The fastest one-seat route from NY to Millinocket is the Shoreline to Boston Switch, RI, up the P&W to the Pan Am all the way to Northern Maine Jct (via the Lower Road) and then CM&Q to Millinocket. To get the freight only portions up to passenger standards would be prohibitively expensive. And let'...

Re: Train POSP

POSP carried CR bound pigs (better access to the Trailvan network) plus general freight billed via the Springfield gateway which was mostly stuff moving in the remnants of the B&M-NH tariffs that used to go thru Worcester. So, yes, Cedar Hill, Oak Point and LIRR traffic was a big part of the mix but...

Re: Wynn Casino cleanup in Everett

They are going to remediate most material on site now. Only a small % Is really bad and will have to move to distant landfills. There may still be a role for rail for the non-hazardous soils because of the amount of material coming out. There is some debate as to whether CSX, PAR or both have access...
