Re: Acela II (Avelia Liberty): Design, Production, Delivery, Acceptance

Radio ahead for a Redcap? Like thinking we need more people to be Taxi dispatchers, that is a thought founded on the false assumptions that - radio bandwidth is scarce - wireless operators know a mysterious art - voice-coded conversation is efficient New Customers want app-mediated self-service Rad...

Re: American Dream Opening and Expanded Meadowlands Rail Service

Got it. I surmised that this was different from the Secaucus loop, but was trying to understand how it would increase service. Now I know - by avoiding the time for the crew to change ends, mainly. So now I ask - how long does that take? Are there a new set of tests, e.g. brake tests, or some other...

Re: Lake Shore Limited

i'm guessing that the steaming tender could be purchased and rehabbed for a lot less than the far far uglier springfield station. Good luck persuading the owners to move their railroad themed restaurant elsewhere after they spent a ton of money rehabbing the place. If they refuse to sell at a reaso...

Re: Amtrak Seating Discussion: Assigned, First-Come, Reserved, Unreserved, Standees

Seems like false advertising, and a class action waiting to happen, for Amtrak to sell “reserved” tickets that don’t really mean the passenger gets a seat but could be left standing. One of the Amtrak Terms and Conditions is that all such disputes must be individually brought and arbitrated pursuan...

Re: Catenary pole replacement imminent on the NEC?

Most of the Cat poles date back to when PRR hung the wire on the NEC,and could be ready to rust away or are not usable for constant tension wire cat. Same could be said of the concrete foundations they are mounted on! As each interlocking has been changed, all the wire is rerigged, needing new cat po...

Yes, but the employees who leave need not be replaced or they could be reassigned to other jobs in Amtrak.

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

It must be noted that under federal law Amtrak's management is required to reduce the cost of providing food service to the point that food service revenues cover the full cost, including labor, to zero out operating loss, by the end of next year. Unless Congress sees fit to change this mandate, foo...

Re: New NJT Heritage cars

It must be noted that 2019 is not the 40th anniversary of NJ Transit rail operations. NJ Transit took over NJ rail service on January 1, 1983, so 2023 would be the appropriate year for commemoration. 2019 is the 40th anniversary of NJ Transit taking over Public Service Electric and Gas Company's bus...

Re: North Jersey Coast Line Thread

Another BRUTAL Sunday on the NJCL during peak summer season, with both the shuttle and the NYP-LB service having trains cancelled left and right. Most of these trains are already SRO on Sunday, and cancelling them just makes it downright dangerous. New engineers can't get here soon enough. Travel A...

fascinated with the idea of riding the "Illinois Centeal Monday morning rail..." that Arlo Guthrie sang of so eloquently. Arlo and others covered this song. It was written and first performed by Steve Goodman after Steve rode the train. Here's a video of Steve performing it. https://www.youtube.com...

"the other Aldene Ramp track"

To the best of my recollection, there never was more than one track installed on the Aldene ramp, though the ramp was built sufficiently wide to accommodate two tracks.

Re: The Raritan Valley Line Thread…

Senator Kean’s bipartisan legislation, S-3574, would require NJ Transit to conduct a feasibility study on offering Raritan Valley Line customers full-time direct rail service to Manhattan’s New York Penn Station. The off peak direct service was great for visiting NYC for events evenings. Hopefully ...
