The first cars were moved into the new South Boston 2 carbarn in late December. Most were "bugged" in under their own power, Nagasaki #134 was pushed by hand. There are presently 5 cars inside. This has also been the first winter that our work equipment has been protected: Claremont #4, GE...

B&M 4-axle depressed center flat car #5101 is now visible in the former Salem MA freight yard after major brush clearing.

Nationally, the process of eliminating cabooses began about 1982 and was complete by 1988. IIRC the B&M made most of the changes around 1984, but an operating employee would know better.

The Flying Yankee Association submitted a proposal to NH DOT in early January. We hope to hear NH DOT's decision the first week of March. If the FYA's proposal is selected by NH DOT, the transaction still has to pass review by the NH Executive Council. We don't have a timeline for that. But if we're...

Re-establishing the Eastern to Portsmouth would take a new Merrimack River bridge, high-level or draw. Plus two road underpasses and two overpasses in MA, road underpasses in Seabrook and Hampton, a marsh culvert in Hampton Falls and some way of getting trains around or through the Seabrook nuke sit...

Aside from COAST and Wildcat Transit, NH has essentially zero regional transit. COAST runs in Portsmouth metro and NW along both sides of the Piscataqua to Dover, Rochester and Farmington, The NH seacoast has COAST because private bus service lasted longer in the commuter zone for Portsmouth Navy Ya...

It's been a while since I've ridden the Eastern Route, but years ago you could spot the West Lynn station location by the concrete stairs and platform remaining on the inland side of the tracks.

Far more efficient to replace ties after snow is gone and frost is out of the ground, probably why April was chosen. But the way this winter has gone, they might be able to start early.

Yes, I mean the "front ladder", though that's the first time I've heard that name. I saw a story about the rebuilding only a few days after I posted. I sincerely hope the work comes out better than the average MBTA project...

The layout of slip switches and crossovers at Tower A is essentially unchanged from the original construction of the new North Station before 1930. The sharp switch angle was necessary then to get maximum track length on the commuter coach yards on either side of the main tracks. Also, the original ...

Toronto Transit Commission CLRV #4068 arrived at Seashore Nov. 30 2023 and was unloaded Dec. 1. It's outdoors next to our Bus Display on special track built to simplify swapping trucks once a pair is re-gauged. We expect the first streetcars to be stored in the new South Boston 2 carhouse in the nex...

In mid-November, CN 1200 volt electric locomotive 6714 was shipped to the Halton County museum west of Toronto.

Almost 50 years ago, I rode the Montrealer all the way north and returned to NYC on the Adirondack using only my draft card and maybe my college ID. No sky was observed falling...

I rode the Empire Builder over Stampede Pass and down the river through Cle Elum and Yakima in 1976 (so I missed the NP in Montana, as the NCH of that era used it, while the Builder used GN). It was signaled at that time, and I recall speeds in the 50-70 MPH range. The Stampede Pass route was 396 mi...

The book I use for track work at Seashore is the FRA's, because they give it out. I doubt the FTA differs much.
