Re: Rockland Branch Discussion

I have heard that the Bath lift bridge is in need of major structural repair. This might be the tipping point which means that the bridge gets removed, and the Rockland branch (at least east of Bath) is no more.

So ... is there any service west of Albany? I keep hearing about various trains operating in western NY, wondering how they get there.

Generally speaking, living in Maine, I find it easiest/"quickest" to take Concord Coach bus from Portland to Boston South Station, then catch the train south. Similar story going north (and usually coming north I'm eager to get home). Concord has frequent service Boston to Portland, Downea...

Love it! Glad my Downeaster rates so well.

The way it was explained to me is that 7470's cab interior is wood-lined, which is standard in steel cab steam locos.

The watchman got to it just in time to save the roundhouse, as flames were rocketing out the cab windows and licking the roof timbers.

I believe that there's railroad track inside the shipyard in downtown Bath, but I don't think that there's a connection to the Rockland Branch (in years past it was underneath the Route 1 viaduct). AFAIK the Hardings plant in Brunswick is the only BIW facility with rail access.

Visited Boston on the Downeaster Friday. Lots of work still to do on the GX on the Lowell Line, but the service facility near BET looks (on the outside) to be complete. In the distance the viaduct looked like it had catenary, although only posts are up next to the Lowell Line. Some spots have track,...

I think it's a mistake on whoever made the public timetable grid - Woburn is getting skipped on the weekends, not Haverhill. Somebody made a mistake when moving rows around.

There's still Amtrak's eastbound and westbound bypasses to construct, correct?

There's 2 or 3 Concord busses to Bangor via I-95 and one via Rt 1 (2 in summer), and I think Greyhound has one bus to Bangor. There's only one bus continuing north of Bangor to Aroostook County, and perhaps one bus east of Bangor (I'm not really sure about that one). No busses that branch off of I-9...

The Downeaster goes back to all 5 round trips today, including the stop at Old Orchard Beach. Interestingly enough, the weekday and weekend schedules are the same.

It was a former Maine Central Railroad bridge that got a second life on the WW&F.

The Back Road is currently cut in Richmond, a bridge over a highway was removed. I think it was too low, and the span is pretty narrow. I can think of another bridge in Topsham with a similar problem (too narrow crossing the road). Replacing these spans with modern highway width bridges should be to...

Sorry to resurrect this thread. I've been scanning old family slides and found this one in the collection, and ran across this thread when I searched Woodland Museum. My parents were married July 1968, and honeymooned in Niagara Falls. My father was big into railroads, so I think they must have hit ...
