Re: Railroads of Southern & SW Wisconsin

I just read Daniel Lanz's excellent book "Railroads of Southern & Southwestern Wisconsin - Development to Decline". The book was written in 1985 however, and many of the lines that were still in active service at that time have since been abandoned. Does anyone know another publication which can br...

Re: Where to find information on map on CNW in 1992 in Wisconsin

Take a look here:

http://www.historicmapworks.com/

It may not be on a railroad map or the exact year that you want, but might find what you are looking for.

Re: Old C&NW Diesels

Thanks for the reply westr. And thanks for clearing up the mystery of the green diesel. Hopefully someday I can identify which one it was that I was seeing. Came across this picture of a Fairbanks Morse with the end stripes. It is located at Milton Wisconsin. http://www.fuzzyworld3.com/pictures3/rai...

Old C&NW Diesels

I posted this on the American Rails forum C&NW category also, but seeing that neither that location nor this one sees a lot of traffic, decided to post it on both. I grew up near the C&NW line between Fond du lac and Wisconsin Rapids-Marshfield Wisconsin. When I was young, and too young to remember ...

Earlier this winter, I traveled the 400 recreation trail from Sparta to Reedsburg by snowmobile. The tunnels are closed during the winter and the trail bypasses them. I assume the reason is because of the same problem the railroad had - if the doors were left open the ice would build up to the point...

Metra- there is no date with this picture, but it shows the Tunnel City tunnel. It looks like what may be the old tunnel to the left.

SlowFreight, there is a tunnel on the old Illinois Central line at Exeter which was listed by Nukengineer, but I found no others. Found one at Strawbridge that was on a zinc mining line. A picture and story are here: http://www.pbase.com/trailryder/image/64475716 There is also one listed as at Bunco...

The Omaha trail tunnel is between Elroy and Camp Douglas, Juneau County, Fountain Township, at the village of Tunnel (once was, anyway). It is one of five tunnels located fairly close together, the other four are in neighboring Monroe County, the furthest two are about 21 miles apart. It is on the l...

Nukengineer, it has been quite awhile since you posted, so you may have found the information, but if not I found this. The Tunnel City tunnel is just west of Tunnel City in Greenfield Township Section 26' http://www.historicmapworks.com/Sections/Maps/viewPlateUS-60724.htm It appears that the Tunnel...

More information on the line: http://my.coredcs.com/~bbokrlwy/wb120102/b120102.html http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/WIshortlines/messages/40 Apparently the tracks from Trevino to Durand were left in place for the proposed power plant. The plant was not built then, but the reason for the tracks...

Thanks SG and mtuandrew. I have ascertained that it was the line at the Chippewa River. The tracks are still in place at highway 35 and it appears that the recently laid blacktop was put right over the rails. By the growth on the roadbed, it doesn't appear that the tracks have been used for a few ye...

Thanks Nuken, It appears that it is the line near the Chippewa river. My fault, I did not study the map well enough. From what I see on the map, the line junctioned with the main line at the village of Trevino (of which there may be nothing left) and went to Eau Claire. The part near Eau Claire is n...

Rail line in Wisconsin

I was on a motorcycle ride a week ago on highway 35 along the Mississippi river in Wisconsin. The highway crossed a rail line at a right angle that had not been used for some time. Brush had grown up on the bed, but the rails were still there and it appeared that the blacktop of the road had been la...
